Magnificent Monday: Comet Men Get Big Upset, Lady Comets Split Over Weekend

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a big weekend of 4 home games this past Friday & Saturday for both basketball teams, as we opened up our NSAA conference season against Presentation College and the University of Jamestown.

Friday’s games ended in a complete sweep for both Comet teams, as the Women handled PC with strong defense and some good spurts of offense to pull away with a 31 point victory.  The Men had a handful to contain with the Saints, as the final 4.5 minutes of play was perhaps the most nerve-racking time frame for both teams in the game.  The score was 74-72 in favor of the Comets at the 4:31 mark, with both teams going scoreless and playing some stingy defense until the buzzer.

Women’s Recap

Men’s Recap

Saturday’s games were against nationally ranked teams for the Comets, as the UJ women were ranked #8 and their Men were ranked #18.  The Lady Comets were close in the first half, but a cold second half allowed UJ to pull ahead and keep off a late Comet fight.  For our Comet Men, they came out ready to play after a taxing game on Friday night and were able to hold a high-scoring team to 66 points and defeat the conference rival in the end, 80-66. It was a big win for first year Comet head coach Darren Tighe, as his team is now on a 5 game winning streak and 2-0 to start conference play.

Next action for the Men will be Tuesday night at 7pm against UM-Crookston in an exhibition game.

Both teams return to conference battles this weekend on the road against long-standing rival Valley City State on Friday and then out to Dickinson State on Saturday.

When we play Valley City State, you know what that means: RIVALRY WEEK!
