Mayville State Donut Dash Was A Mile Full of Smiles!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

A new and exciting fundraising event was held on campus last night, bringing a mile full of smiles to everyone who did the race!

The first ever MSU Donut Dash was held on a 1/2 mile loop around campus, in which participants got to stop for a delicious Soholt Donut at every 1/4 mile, covering one complete mile in total!

Participants also got a cool little backpack as a gift for their support!

Over 100 people participated and a host also chipped in from afar as a Virtual Dasher to support the cause.

The money fundraised from the event goes towards the Jenny (Rettig) Karboviak Memorial Scholarship here at Mayville State.

Jenny was a 2013 Early Childhood AA graduate from Mayville State and began working at the MSU Child Development Program in 2014.  Soon after that, she met Admissions Recruiter Rick Karboviak, and the two became engaged in 2015.  On June 4th, 2016, they were married here in Mayville.  Shortly after their wedding, Jenny passed away very suddenly, due to a disease she had called NF-1, or Neurofibromatosis.  Jenny was affected with large and small tumors on her body, which are unable to be removed for people with NF-1.

Shortly after her passing, a scholarship fund was established at the MSU Foundation in her honor.  The scholarship benefits a student each year who is seeking either a 2 year or 4 year degree in Early Childhood.  The love that Jenny had for children can still shine on through the students who will receive this scholarship!

One of Jenny’s passions was running in high school, as she ran on the XC team and also on the track team for Medina High School in Medina, ND. The Donut Dash was inspired by her love for running, and also the great donuts from Soholt Bakery!

In the midst of the 100+ who took part in the Donut Dash were members of the MSU Men’s Basketball Team and also some from Comet Softball.  The MBB squad greeting finishers with a fun little tunnel to go through at the end.

They also enjoyed their stops for Soholt Donuts along the way!

As a grand total, the event raised over $1100 towards the scholarship!

Another fun note: Over 20 dozen donuts were consumed during the event!  Not everyone took a donut at each stop, so plenty of donuts were shared in some departments around campus this morning.

Comet Alum, Brandy Kropp, was the lucky winner in the Virtual Dasher option from afar, which she’ll receive a dozen Soholt Donuts shipped to her!

As I take off my cape and mask for a moment, I, Rick Karboviak, would like to thank everyone for their support in this fantastic event!  It truly means a lot to myself, Jenny’s family and my own family for the support given for this event to happen. Jenny’s spirit and love for kids will continue to live on through her memorial scholarship.  This event truly was a Mile Full of Smiles for everyone involved!

Thank you!
