Terrific Tuesday: Warner is POTW (again!) Plus Weekend Wrap-Ups

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It’s another Terrific Tuesday!

Let’s get to the awesome news:

Jayden Warner is the NSAA Defensive Player of the Week, once again!

jayden warner

In the first week of the season, Warner and teammate Jana Mehus were Players of the Week in their roles as Defensive Specialist and as Setter (Mehus). Jayden had another awesome weekend of defensive play down at the Corn Palace Tourney in Mitchell, SD.  She collected 135 digs on the weekend, an average of 9 per set.  Her efforts helped the Comets go 2-2 on their trip and kept them in some close sets throughout the contest.

Jayden is also ranked nationally #1 in Digs/Set and #2 in Total Digs!

It is the second POTW award for Warner in just 3 weeks time!

Congrats Jayden on A JOB WELL DONE!

Weekend Wrap-Up:

Over the Labor Day Weekend, the Comets were away from Comet Territory and on the road.  As mentioned, VB was in South Dakota and Football traveled to Fremont, Nebraska to take on the Warriors of Midland University.

In Volleyball Action at the Corn Palace Tourney, the Comets split their matches on both days.  Friday’s action Against the University of Montana-Western Bulldogs, the Comets battled all the way to set #5 and came away with the victory.  In the second match of the day, rather, late into the night at almost a 9pm start time, the Comets took on the host team of Dakota Wesleyan and had a series of tight battles with multiple ties and some big runs on both sides to contend with.  The Comets unfortunately lost to DWU in a 3-1 contention. In cased you missed it, catch the recap here!

Saturday’s action for VB had them facing Sterling College, then finishing off with Mount Marty College. The Comets were able to take Sterling College in a 3-0 sweep, but fell to Mount Marty in a 3-0 sweep after another match of close scores mixed in with big come-from-behind runs on each side. Catch the full scoop here!

The Comets are getting off to a decent start with a 4-4 record so far and are nationally ranked as a team in Digs/Game at #4 with 20.9 digs each game!

Comet Football:  The Comet FB squad started out in a good battle with Midland in the first half, but things got away in the second half on them.  The scores seem to be answered back and forth at first, with Midland having a 29 to 20 edge at halftime.  Midland took control of the second half and scored another four TD’s to secure the victory for them in a 56-20 ending.  Despite the loss, the Comets tallied 448 yards on the day and had 337 in the air.  Creighton Pfau went 24-44 for 325 of them and no interceptions on the day. Trent Momon had 183 of those yards and Jacob Hanson had 101 from the air as well. Catch the recap if you missed it, right here.

The Comets look to sharpen things up for FARMERS BOWL WEEK this week, as they have their first-ever home game on the new artificial turf on Jerome Berg Field.  It will be a historic game that should bring out the Comet faithful to pack the stands for that one.

Farmers Bowl Events this weekend:

Saturday is our Farmers Bowl Day, kicking it off with the Field Frenzy 5K at 8am, starting outside Old Main.  It is only $10 to register.  Download your forms at ClimbThePodium.com .  The event is free for MSU students with showing your student ID.

Mayville State Donut Dash Was A Mile Full of Smiles!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

A new and exciting fundraising event was held on campus last night, bringing a mile full of smiles to everyone who did the race!

The first ever MSU Donut Dash was held on a 1/2 mile loop around campus, in which participants got to stop for a delicious Soholt Donut at every 1/4 mile, covering one complete mile in total!

Participants also got a cool little backpack as a gift for their support!

Donut Dash Bag

Over 100 people participated and a host also chipped in from afar as a Virtual Dasher to support the cause.

The money fundraised from the event goes towards the Jenny (Rettig) Karboviak Memorial Scholarship here at Mayville State.

Jenny was a 2013 Early Childhood AA graduate from Mayville State and began working at the MSU Child Development Program in 2014.  Soon after that, she met Admissions Recruiter Rick Karboviak, and the two became engaged in 2015.  On June 4th, 2016, they were married here in Mayville.  Shortly after their wedding, Jenny passed away very suddenly, due to a disease she had called NF-1, or Neurofibromatosis.  Jenny was affected with large and small tumors on her body, which are unable to be removed for people with NF-1.

Shortly after her passing, a scholarship fund was established at the MSU Foundation in her honor.  The scholarship benefits a student each year who is seeking either a 2 year or 4 year degree in Early Childhood.  The love that Jenny had for children can still shine on through the students who will receive this scholarship!

One of Jenny’s passions was running in high school, as she ran on the XC team and also on the track team for Medina High School in Medina, ND. The Donut Dash was inspired by her love for running, and also the great donuts from Soholt Bakery!

In the midst of the 100+ who took part in the Donut Dash were members of the MSU Men’s Basketball Team and also some from Comet Softball.  The MBB squad greeting finishers with a fun little tunnel to go through at the end.

They also enjoyed their stops for Soholt Donuts along the way!

As a grand total, the event raised over $1100 towards the scholarship!

Another fun note: Over 20 dozen donuts were consumed during the event!  Not everyone took a donut at each stop, so plenty of donuts were shared in some departments around campus this morning.

Comet Alum, Brandy Kropp, was the lucky winner in the Virtual Dasher option from afar, which she’ll receive a dozen Soholt Donuts shipped to her!

As I take off my cape and mask for a moment, I, Rick Karboviak, would like to thank everyone for their support in this fantastic event!  It truly means a lot to myself, Jenny’s family and my own family for the support given for this event to happen. Jenny’s spirit and love for kids will continue to live on through her memorial scholarship.  This event truly was a Mile Full of Smiles for everyone involved!

Thank you!

Rick “Captain Comet” Karboviak

Jayden Warner is a 5’2″ junior Libero from right here in Mayville, ND. Jayden had a busy weekend as well, collecting 118 digs, nearly 30 per match. The back row powerhouse has had a lot of experience protecting the court for the Comets. Both her and Mehus have been developing a good chemistry that helps set up the firepower for the Comet offense up front.

Comet Volleyball Brings Home Two W’s from Georgia

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Comet Athletics got off to an official start on Friday when our Comet Volleyball team went to Brunswick, GA to play in the College of Coastal Georgia Mariner Invitational.

They played 3 games on Friday and 1 more game on Saturday.

Friday’s action was a very long day for the Comets, as the day went up & down for them.  After a 3-2 loss in the first match vs the host school of CCG, they nabbed their first win of the season against Warner University later in the afternoon in a 3-1 battle. Their final game was later in the night, going from 9 to 11pm eastern time, against Tennessee Wesleyan.  The Comets played tough against TWU with close battles in the first two sets, but TWU got the best of them in a 3-1 loss.

Saturday only had one game on the schedule for the Comets, which had the team pushing the limit to 5 sets. In that match against Faulkner University, the Comets broke free halfway through the first set and secured the win with a 25-14 score. Faulkner played it tight with the Comets with 11 ties and multiple lead changes. It looked like Faulkner was running away with the set when it hit 24-19 in their favor, but the Comets took a 4-0 run to come within one. The Eagles got the final point however to take the 2nd set.

The third set saw the Eagles take another one from the Comets after a small series of runs.  With their backs to the wall, the Comets came out strong in the 4th set and hit the Eagles with an 8-2 run, and an huge 13-4 run to take a 25-10 win and push it to the 5th set.

Although the Comets were down early by 3, a big 6-0 run helped spark the offense and was a key to their win in the 5th set and overall in the match.

For full match recaps, go to here for Friday’s action and here for Saturday’s action.

It will be a while before the VB team is in action again, next stop will be Mitchell, SD on 8/31 and 9/1 for two matches each day.

Don’t forget: Comet Football begins this coming Saturday!  They will be on the road against Montana State-Northern.

Fall 2018 Semester begins on Monday this week as well, with classes starting at 4pm that day.  First full day of classes will be Tuesday.

President Van Horn Sets The Tone for Cometville with “Comet Proud” Message For All

Greetings, Comet Nation!

As part of the Pre-Service kickoff for Faculty & Staff on the campus of Mayville State, our new President, Dr. Brian Van Horn, gave his State of the University Address to the public on Wednesday here in the Classroom Auditorium.

Dr Van Horn(Image from Grand Forks Herald)

Some key points he addressed were:

A growing and diverse student body has a vast array of needs and educational goals to attain, with many avenues that need to be offered in order to attain them. There are many ways to meet those needs, such as collaborating with K-12 leaders, Community Colleges and adding additional degree programs.

In one example, he spoke about a common issue facing some students today. They start out attending a 4 year university, attain perhaps close to 90 credits and suddenly have to leave school for a family illness or other matters in life.  Could at least a 2 year Associate of Arts degree be awarded to the student, so they can at least enter the workforce with an education in their hands, and an opportunity in the future to continue that education?

As reported in the Grand Forks Herald’s story -“There are reasons why students have to leave, it’s not a choice,” he said. “We want to get this associate of arts, so if a student stops out they will have a credential that will help them make a living until we can get them back into school.”

Van Horn also noted the hard work and dedication of the previous administrations in putting Mayville State in a solid place amidst statewide budget issues and concerns that affect higher education in the state. By having balanced budgets, that work has helped out MSU tremendously in facing these challenges.

President Van Horn also feels that our goals and objectives are in line with our state’s efforts with the Envision 2030 and NDUS Edge missions.

He also noted how he has been impressed with the spirit of the students at Mayville State and how meeting a few while on his visit for the interviews really made an impact on him. He pointed out four individual students he’s met so far and shared their stories with the crowd.

As he put it very succinctly “Every place has brick and mortar buildings, but it is the people around here that I really like and have been impressed with since I arrived here.”

As quoted once again from the Herald, he finished out his message with a strong statement of hope, pride and encouragement for what lies ahead in the next 12 to 36 months:

“We’re Mayville State University. We do what we do and we do what we do well,” he said. “I’m Comet proud. I’m proud of what we stand for. I’m proud of our faculty, our staff and how we treat students.”

#CometProud, indeed!

We’re all looking forward to an eventful and impactful year here at Mayville State!

One Week To Go!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Are you all geared up for another school year to begin here in Cometville?

Things are really lining up this week for students and athletes to begin Fall 2018 on the right foot.

Volleyball begins their season this week, with their first matches down in Georgia this Friday, August 17th. They begin with a game versus the host school, College of Coastal Georgia, at 8am CST. They’ll play 2 more contests that day in the Coastal Georgia Tourney, with a match against Walker University at 2:30, and Tennessee Wesleyan at 7pm. (all times are Central times listed).

Saturday they finish off their southern trip with a battle against Faulkner University at 12:30pm.

Catch a quick preview in the first edition of Comet Corner, with new Athletic Director Ryan Hall having a chat with Head VB Coach Lindsey Johnson!

Also here on Friday, new Comets Baseball players are getting registered for classes and taken through their orientations as well.

Saturday, a scrimmage is planned for Comet Football down at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN at 1pm.  Jerome Berg Field is still in the process of being converted to artificial turf, a process that should be wrapping up within the next few weeks before the first home game for the Farmers Bowl on Sept 8th.

The Comets Football team travels to Montana State-Northern for a game there on August 25th.

Fall 2018 begins on Monday, August 20th at 4pm, with orientations and final registration taking place that day on campus.  Campus Move-In Day starts on Saturday, August 18th at noon for new and returning students to move into their residence halls on campus.

Finally, here is a sneak peek at Cap’s new jersey for this year.

We’re Gearing Up For a Big Year in Cometville…

The Fall 2018 Semester is just DAYS away from starting!

Comet Fever is in full effect already, with our Comet Football and Comet Volleyball squads already starting their seasons with fall practices and team meetings.

Check out their season previews here:

Comet Volleyball Preview

Comet Football Preview

We’ve been busy registering a LOT of New Comets this summer, with 3 Student Success Days in June, and quite a few for the month of August. We just had one for new FB players, we’ll have another on Thursday this week for new students, another for new Baseball players on the 17th, and finally, another orientation/registration on August 20th before classes officially begin at Mayville State!  It is amazing to see the large numbers of new students coming to campus, who will make MSU their new home!

We also have our new President, Dr. Brian Van Horn, on campus, plus our new Athletic Director, Ryan Hall, who both recently started in July here in Cometville. Welcome to campus, gentlemen! We’re all excited to have you here. Cap here wishes you both the best as you help lead our campus forward!

Perhaps our biggest update in Athletics is the conversion of our field at Jerome Berg Field into artificial turf! The ground-breaking ceremony was held in June, with work starting in early July on the project.

Below is a snapshot after things were leveled off around August 3rd, just one more step in the many steps it takes to prepare the field for this historic transformation! The retaining walls and drain tile have been all put in place. The bleachers on the north side, as you can see, are removed as the field had to be wide enough to meet new college football standards. Things have changed a bit with football field dimensions since the field was built back in 1941!

Anticipated date will be August 24th for completion, with the first home game scheduled for Sept 8th for our MSU Farmers Bowl game!

It looks to be a fantastic view and I know I can’t wait for the turf installation to begin!

I CAN’T WAIT!
