Comet VB Updates, Sportsmens Raffle, COMET Run, FB Preps for Thursday

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comet VB team had a busy weekend with 4 games, our CAC Sportsmen’s Raffle was another huge success, our Running Club has a fun group run activity starting this week, plus Comet Football plays this Thursday too!

Comet Volleyball Update:

Our Lady Comets traveled to Iowa for another series of games in the Red Raider Classic at Northwestern College. They started off Friday with a  very tough and close match against Dakota Wesleyan.  After falling in the first set, the Comets took the 2nd one in a 25-23 battle.  The third set had DWU taking that one, while the 4th set went all the way to a 29-31 score, with DWU coming up with the overall victory in the end.

The Comets fell in three straight in their 2nd match of the day against host team Northwestern College. Scores were 10-25, 19-25, and 10-25 as the Comets struggled to come up with some solid offense.

Saturday’s games were against Briar Cliff and Morningside.  The Comets hung with BC in their battles but came up shy in 20-25, 22-25 and 22-25 scores.  Finishing up with weekend with Morningside, the Comets couldn’t get things firing right in the first set, falling 8-25.  Sets 2 and 3 were identical as well, falling in 18-25 scores in each. Grab all the stats from the weekend in the recaps found at MSUComets.com.

Next action for the Comets will be down in Omaha, Nebraska over the Labor Day Weekend coming up.

Sportsmen’s Raffle Another Huge Success:

The CAC’s 11th Annual Sportsmen’s Raffle was held once again this year at the Mayville Armory, where a complete sell-out happened for the 500 raffle tickets, in which 50 guns were raffled off.  A Polaris Ranger ATV was also given away, along with side raffles of cash prizes, gift cards, a gun safe, and many other hunting gift packages.  Thanks to all who supported the CAC Sportsmen’s Raffle this past weekend from both near and afar!

Go on a COMET Run with the Running Club!

Something new for students to try this year is the Running Club’s “COMET Run”.  COMET stands for Course and Obstacle Metabolic Exercise Training.  Members will start at the campus center parking lot by Berg Hall and run over to a nearby park.  They will go through a series of exercises in interval fashion, using various pieces of park equipment and other obstacles.

The Running Club will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6:30am to go through this fun circuit, and try to wrap things up around 7am.  Running Club invites other faculty, staff and students who want to take in this fun and free workout!

MSU Running Club is also open to those interested in competing collegiately in XC and/or Track & Field as an individual, unattached athlete.  Since MSU does not have a full XC or Track squad, students who have an interest in those sports can choose to compete as individuals, running ‘unattached’ from their college. For more information on how to compete this way, please contact Rick Karboviak at Richard.karboviak@mayvillestate.edu

We’re just a few days away from Comet Football starting their first game of the season!  We’ll play down at Buena Vista University this Thursday night at 6pm. Coach Thom and his entire crew have been waiting for this week since they came onto campus back on August 6th for fall camp. I’m not sure yet if the game will be broadcast via radio or online yet, so stay tuned for an update!

Mayville State University Collegiate DECA Participates in International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California

From April 19th through April 24st, 15 Mayville State University Collegiate DECA students participated in the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The annual conference provides the opportunity for students to compete against others from all over the world in business specific events. MSU students had to qualify for the Anaheim conference at the state competition held in Fargo, North Dakota this past February.

Collegiate DECA’s overlying mission is to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”  MSU Collegiate DECA is open to students in all majors. Students spend many hours fundraising, but also receive generous support from the Larson Leadership Program and the “After Hours” social events organized by the Division of Business.

As a team, the Mayville State University Chapter received the Community Service Award which is designed to recognize Collegiate DECA chapters for civic activities performed on campus and in their communities. Maddie Gallardo was recognized individually for her contributions to the state of North Dakota as a ND Collegiate DECA Vice President with the Outstanding State Leadership ribbon.

The MSU team received a chapter leadership award and all 15 students received individual leadership recognition on the stage at the Anaheim Hilton ballroom during the Leadership Passport Awards ceremony. The Collegiate DECA Leadership Passport Program encourages local chapters and individual members to plan activities and participate in events that enhance the experiences of members. The leadership passport rewards action taken by members and chapters that build personal and professional skill sets focused around the organizations four attributes and values: competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork. As part of the conference, students also participated in various Career Academies in which they had the opportunity to learn from business professionals in many different industries.

Comets Battle Jimmies in Two Places to Complete Series, Activities Set for This Week on Campus

Greetings, Comet Nation!

We’re in the final days of Mayville State Mania in the month of April, and also near the end of the regular season games for Baseball and Softball. Let’s see how we did yesterday…

Our Comet teams had to finish out their weekend series with the University of Jamestown Jimmies in two different towns to complete their weekend series of games, which were postponed due to weather.

After being spoiled with some days in the 50’s and 60’s the last few weeks, we have had to suffer through some snow that came its way into the region on Sunday and caused Baseball to travel to Aberdeen, SD to play their games, while Softball scheduled an afternoon set down in Wahpeton, ND.

While playing the Jimmies on neutral ground, it didn’t go the way the Comets wanted it to.

In Baseball action, the Jimmies got the best of the Comets, twice, to take the 4 game series 3-1. The first game was a close contest that went into extra innings, with the Jimmies coming out on top after 10 innings of play, 7-6.  The final game ended with UJ eeking out a low-scoring, 3-1 win.  The Comets now sit in 3rd place in the conference behind Bellevue in front and Valley City State in 2nd.

In Softball action, our Lady Comets were unfortunately shut-out in back to back games, with a 6-0 loss and an 8-0 loss to finish their series against the Jimmies. We’re still in the middle of the conference with a 11-13 record and 17-23 overall.

Look for updates and full recaps soon at MSUComets.com.

Due to the wet weather we are currently having, the NDSU vs Mayville State game that was set for tonight at Newman Outdoor Field has been cancelled and will not be made up.  This game was set to be televised tonight on the local BEK Sports channel 4.2.

Upcoming action for both squads will be this Friday and Saturday, as Baseball takes on Winnipeg in a 4 game stretch at Home, while Softball takes on Presentation College at Home as well on those same days.

Before the Baseball and Softball games start on Saturday, but sure to catch the MSU Comets Football Spring Game, held this year at Jerome Berg Field at 9am!

Come and get a glimpse of the new Coach Thom era that has begun at Cometville.

Other Events This Week on Campus:

Free Movie, tonight, at 8pm in the Upper Lounge

Wednesday: Intramural Dodgeball action in the Wellness Center

Thursday & Friday: Student Success Days – 12 to 4pm on Thursday, 9am to 12pm on Friday in both the Luckasen Room and Heritage Room. It is a great opportunity for current students to get things squared away before next year with your advisor, financial aid, and more!

Also on Friday:

Cultures from Around the Globe

9:00am – Study Abroad Showcase, Campus Center

Magnificent Monday: More Wins Plus an All-American Selection!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comet Teams collected some more wins to finish the week out strong in Arizona, plus we found out on Friday evening that our WBB team has an All-American Honorable Mention athlete on it’s squad!

Softball:

Our Lady Comets played 4 games to finish out their week, splitting the set of 4 with 2 wins and 2 losses. The Comets won first over Hamline, 9-5, then fell to Midland later in the day in a 7-5 loss.

Friday’s action had battles with Robert Morris again as well as Benedictine-Mesa. They fought to a 4-2 victory over RM and fell to a hot-hitting Benedictine-Mesa team in an 11-1 loss. Overall, they went 6-4 on the trip, which boosts their overall record to 7-11 on the season thus far.

Baseball:

The Baseball team played a doubleheader against Carthage College on Friday to complete their Arizona tour. The first game went into extra innings, first at 5-5, then 6-6, and finally 7-6 in favor of the Comets.

The second game wasn’t quite as close, as we lost in a 10-4 score.

Andi Gayner Selected as NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention!

A huge congratulations goes out to #42, Andi Gayner on the Lady Comets Basketball team!

She’s been selected as an NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention selection!

Coming off a stunning season where the Junior from Dassel, MN was the NSAA leading scorer (19.1 pts/game) and almost averaging a double-double (7.9 boards/game), Andi’s talents have taken her far this season.

She recorded many double-double games and was the NSAA Player of the Week twice.

She’ll undoubtedly help lead the Lady Comets as a high performer next season for her final one as a Comet.

A Job Well Done, Andi Gayner!

Mayville State Night With the F-M RedHawks!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Last night was a fun and interesting night at the ballpark, with the F-M RedHawks for Mayville State Night!

The first 1000 fans to enter the gates got a free RedHawks & Mayville State lunchbox! A fair amount of fans were lined up at the gates to snag this cool item!

Redhawks entry

The lunchbox came out to be a pretty neat gift to take home!

Redhawks lunchbox 1 redhawks lunchbox 2

Mayville State fans who purchased a ticket to the game through the MSU Foundation were treated to an all-you-can-eat buffet of burgers, brats and hot dogs, as a part of the Third Base Party Deck package.

Helping with the serving of food to the gang of Comet Nation fans was one of our very own students, Leighanna Helgoe, who is doing her internship this summer with the RedHawks!

Redhawks Intern Leighanna

The game actually picked up where it left off on Tuesday night, since Tuesday’s game went 17 innings and was called off due to league rules. The game began  at 6pm, with the 7pm game to follow once the first game was completed.

The RedHawks made a quick effort to get runners on base and tied up the game at 4-4, then ending it on a homerun for the 5-4 victory.

Action then rolled into the 7pm game after that.

Comets Baseball Coach Scott Berry threw out the first pitch before the 7pm game started.

MSU Foundation Director, John Klocke, also sang our National Anthem before the game as well!

The game was postponed due to rain in the 3rd inning, then picked up later in the evening to go 7 innings in a 6-6 tie. League rules once again will cause last night’s game to be picked up where it left off in the late afternoon today.

All in all, it was a good time for catching some local professional baseball!

Don’t forget about the MN Twins Outing, coming up in August!

Check it out here for Mayville State Day with the MN Twins at Target Field!

Coach Scott Berry Reaches 1000 Wins!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

History was made yesterday:

Comet Baseball Head Coach Scott Berry achieved a huge milestone with his 998th, 999th, and 1000th wins in Winnipeg, MB!

Coach Berry 1000 Wins Meme

The wins came in 7-4, 3-2 and 12-3 fashion.

Comet Nation was on high alert, glued to their phones, computers, tablets and on social media to catch the historic trip to “#Chasing1000”.

In an unexpected tripleheader of a day, the Comets had a Saturday & Sunday 4 game match-up moved to 3 games on Monday after a lengthy wait due to wet weather. It gave Coach Berry an opportunity to attain the mark all in one day with a 3-game sweep.

The Comets were amped up and ready to help Coach Berry attain this important, historic milestone!

Catch the full report on all the action that led to yesterday’s historic moment:

Here is the story at MSUComets.com.

The Grand Forks Herald also reported on the big day.

Coach Berry is a great example of what it is like to be a Comet.

After playing for legendary Comet Baseball Head Coach Al Meyer, he came back and coached under him for a season in 1981, then took over the program in 1982.

He has been at Mayville State ever since, and has been a huge influence on many students’ lives beyond the baseball diamond. His influence has led him to be inducted into 4 Hall of Fames, and he’s given back to the game by serving on numerous boards, such as being president of the American Baseball Coaches Association in the past. He is now on the ABCA Board of Directors. He has also served on numerous local, regional and national organizations during his time here at Mayville State. He has been a tremendous ambassador for the game!

There will be a special recognition of Coach Berry’s milestone this Saturday at the home DH scheduled against Presentation College.

It certainly is a great day to be a Comet when a milestone like this is reached!

Comet Nation is proud of having Coach Berry as a true leader to follow his example for all these years!

A JOB WELL DONE, COACH BERRY!

Our Comets Lady Softball team also had two home games on Monday versus Dickinson State.

The Comets did not come out on the winning side against the NSAA power, falling 10-5 and 8-0.

Look for an update soon at MSUComets.com.

Is Mayville State Right For You? Yes. U!

Throwback Thursday: 1975-76 – New Lewy Lee Floor, Plus the Internet?

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Today, we take a trip back to 1975-76, to get a unique glimpse of life in the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, plus a story on that new thing they called a ‘computer’, which was ‘connected’ through a system up to UND at the time.

The following was taken from the January 1976 MSC Foundation Bulletin:

FH Headline

FH Extra

In October of 1975, a new style of flooring was installed at the Lewy Lee. This flooring, called “ProTurf”, was pretty well-known to students & visitors of MSC/MSU in the 70’s, 80’s , and 90’s,  when the facility hosted district and regional basketball tournaments for a number of years, not to mention a lot of college championship basketball, too!

Before this, the flooring was a wood floor that was brought up and left as a dirt floor for spring sports, from about 1962 to 1975.

FH ProTurf

The hopes of the ProTurf flooring was to allow the facility to be used by multiple sports for practices and also for the HPE classes. Baseball & Softball could practice in the facility, instead of on the dirt floor. It would certainly eliminate the dust issues created by the dirt floor of years gone by.  It was a new, technologically advanced floor at the time, shining with a deep Comet Blue in the lanes and the outer edges.

However, not all things glisten forever.

The ProTurf floor didn’t hold up well over the course of time. After years of use, abuse, plus decades of practices and games on it for multiple sports, it’s time in the Lewy Lee  came to an end.

An entire new wood floor was installed sometime in the 2003-2004 school year.

A lot of Comet championships  & memories were made on that old, ProTurf floor!

—————–

Today, we take the internet for granted, and get frustrated when a Wi-Fi signal happens to drop on our laptop, tablet, or phone.

Even Captain Comet relies on the internet here on campus, in order to bring you the Captain Comet Chronicles in a timely manner, reaching out across the Facebook, Twitter, and Google Galaxies.

Have you ever wondered though:

When Did the Internet Arrive at Mayville State?

1975-76 wasn’t just a new beginning for the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, there was a new, useful technological advancement being put in place on campus.

A new thing called a ‘computer’ was also installed.

Plus it was ‘connected’ to the one at the University of North Dakota.

Yes, this was the small beginnings of what would later be known as “The Internet”, once computers and technological advancements made their way to more of a mainstream use in education, as we see today.

This article also appeared on the back page of the same MSC Foundation Bulletin issue in January 1976.

Computer Center

Internet 76

As the article states,

“MSC installed a computer terminal, card reader, card punch and printer Oct 23, and the equipment became operational on Oct 27. MSC is now able to make use of the UND computer…”

(To think, it took 4 days for it all to work! We get upset if we can’t print something over Wi-Fi after 4 minutes!)

“The new equipment at the college costs about $500 a month to rent…”

“About 50 percent of Mayville State’s computer time is being used for educational purposes, Johnson said, while the remaining 50 percent is used for administrative purposes.”

It was also available to use for off-campus use to HS computer programming students and teachers in the area.

Fast forward about 20 plus years to the Fall of 1997: Mayville State became a “Laptop University”, issuing laptops to all students to use as a part of their education. Emailing homework across the internet became not only a reality, but the new norm for college students.

To think, it all started with a punch card computer on campus!
