Comet Throwback Thursday: Lewy Lee

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Today’s Comet Throwback Thursday post is about the Fieldhouse’s namesake, legendary Comet Coach, Lewy Lee.

Born on April 30, 1905, Lewy Lee was a Valley City, ND native and attended UND, where his athletic accomplishments were attaining 4 letters in Football, Basketball and Track. He was nominated as one of the “Greatest Nodak Athletes of All Time” back in 1933 at UND.

Lewy Lee’s tenure at Mayville State began in 1930. He literally WAS the athletic department and physical education department back in his day.  He was a coach for every sport until 1946, transitioning to only Football and Track until 1956. His main titles on campus were Athletic Director and Dean of Men, while serving in multiple offices for the ND Conference of Colleges.

If you were to look back at this time period in the yearbooks and College Exponents of the time, you would see just how well respected Lewy Lee was as a coach and teacher.  His ‘coaching tree’ has grown tremendously from this time period.  Lewy Lee was the coach of then-student Al Meyer in the 1940’s, who went on to become a long-standing coach of multiple sports here at Mayville State through the early 1980’s. Current Head Baseball Coach Scott Berry had Al Meyer as a coach and mentor as well, so the “Lewy Lee Tree” still keeps growing at Mayville State.  Think of the many coaches and teachers who have been taught by those three alone (Lee, Meyer, Berry)! Talk about a true “Legacy of Leadership” here at our institution!

(You can check out the “Legacy of Leadership” Turf Campaign here.)

Lewy passed away on May 4, 1956.

The current Lewy Lee Fieldhouse was dedicated in his name in 1961.  Fittingly, the Comets had their first game in the fieldhouse versus long-standing rival Valley City State for the conference championship honors.

As you can see, the place was packed for the big-time game.  An estimated 3000 were in attendance for the huge landmark event for the college and community.

The Comets were also victorious in the battle and were crowned conference champs! A great way to ‘break in’ the new gymnasium.

Since then, the Comets have filled the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse with thrilling basketball games and championship teams, volleyball games, special events, graduations, and numerous tournaments throughout the decades. It has gone through renovations in the mid 1970’s, and mid 2000’s with the conversion to a tartan flooring in the 70’s to the wood floor we have today. Other additions to meet our growing demands of education in HPE and our Athletics programs were the wellness center and new athletic training room, plus new classrooms and a new performance center and lab completed in 2016.

As stated on his Hall of Fame plaque in the fieldhouse, “Lewy was in every sense of the word an All American among men.”

Lewy Lee certainly started the a defining legacy that continues to grow to this day.

Comet Weekend Review: A Tough 2 Days for 3 Comet Teams

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a very difficult time this past Friday and Saturday for 3 of our Comet teams.

Friday’s action began with the Lady Comet Basketball team facing the NDSU Bison in Fargo in exhibition play.

The Comets struggled to get their high powered offense going and the Bison, playing with early season struggles of their own, were able to climb ahead in the battle.  In the end, the Comets fell to the Bison, 87 to 43.  The loss didn’t affect the overall record due to the exhibition match-up. Catch the recap here at MSUComets.com.

It was a short trip back home for a big NAIA match-up between #3 Concordia University and the Lady Comets on Saturday. It was another struggling day of hoops for us, as the #3 team was showing why they were ranked near the top. Turnovers seems to be an issue all weekend, and things didn’t sharpen up well as the visiting Bulldogs won the game 93 to 58. Catch the review here at MSUComets.com.

At roughly the same time that our Lady Comets were playing at home, the Comet Football team was finishing up their season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State. DSU came out strong right away, scoring 8 touchdowns in the first half, and ten overall in the game.  The Comets were able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, leaving the game 70-7 in favor of the Blue Hawks.  Read up on the game here at MSUComets.com.

To wrap up the day, the Comet Men’s Basketball team travelled to Vermillion, SD to take on the USD Coyotes, coached by former Comet MBB coach Craig Smith.  The Comets were able to keep it as close as 2 points when the score read 31-29 in the first half. However, USD took control and had an advantage in rebounding overall, turning many of those into some extended runs.  In the end, the Comets fell in this exhibition match-up, 87-59.  On a bright note, Daniel Lindgren led all scorers with 18 on the night.  See the review here at MSUComets.com.

Now that Comet Football has ended, it’s ALL BASKETBALL for a few months.

The MBB team will play Minot State on Tuesday, with Friday/Saturday action down in St Cloud, MN vs St Cloud State and St Scholastica, respectively. Our Lady Comets will travel to Bemidji State in Bemidji, MN on Saturday as well for an exhibition game there.

The Men are currently at 1-2 overall, while the Lady Comets are sitting at 4-1 overall.

Keep tabs with what’s taking place at MSUComets.com!

Comet Pride Friday: Weekend Preview

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday to you!

We have 4 games going on this weekend: 1 today, and 3 tomorrow!

Today: Our Lady Comets Basketball team will travel an hour to the south and play NDSU in an exhibition game. If you’re unable to make it there, the game should be broadcast on Midco Sports Network and ESPN3, plus WatchESPN.com online. Radio broadcasts will be on 92.7 FM and 1660 AM. It will be a great test for the Lady Comets tonight, since Saturday’s game will be a challenge too.

Saturday’s Games:

Football: Our men will take the field for the last time this season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State on Saturday at 1pm Mountain time, 2pm Central time. DSU is 7-0 in the NSAA, 8-1 overall and ranked #12 in the country. It will be a tough battle ahead for the Comets, as we’ve battled through injuries and a series of very hard contests this season.

Women’s Basketball: You can catch your Lady Comets on Saturday at home against Concordia University, which is ranked #3 in the nation right now in the NAIA. The Lady Comets have been hot at home as they’ve come out of the blocks in a 4-0 start on the Lewy Lee hardwood. Game time is 2pm. Come out to support our Lady Comets and give them a huge home court advantage!

Men’s Basketball: Our Comet Men will travel to Vermillion, SD to take on the University of South Dakota in an exhibition game as well on Saturday night at 6pm. The head coach of USD is former Comet MBB coach, Craig Smith, who led the Comets to their greatest success in program history in 2007 when the Comets reached the NAIA championship game and were national runners-up. The Comet Men are currently 1-2 on the season so far, and the test against USD will give them a great challenge to prepare for the conference season that begins shortly.

The Football and WBB games on Saturday can be watched live through our Live Portal site . We’ll be providing the live feed from home, while DSU will be providing the live feed from DSU.

The MBB game will be provided live through USD .

Be sure to catch the game at home on Saturday if you can, and catch the Comets online from afar! It is certainly a great time to be a Comet fan with so many options to watch all your teams from a distance!

THANK YOU, VETERANS!

Comet Throwback Thursday: 50 Years Ago – Student Fees From 1967, Comet FB Seniors End Season

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Captain Comet is back with the blog!  It has been a long time since I last blogged for the Comet faithful, but now I’ll be coming back with some Throwback Thursday posts and some previews and reviews of Comet Athletics as well.

One of the favorite and most shared posts have been the popular “Comet Throwback Thursday” posts from the blog.

Well, it’s Thursday, and it is about time to return to those posts!

Let’s hop in the time machine and go back to November of 1967, and take a peek into the College Exponent’s archives.

The Comet FB team was just finishing their season up. There was a nice article in the Exponent about the group of seniors who were finishing their football career as a Comet.

Seniors pictured are:

Front Row: Earl Larson, Wally Peterson, John Fyling, Mel Lurth.

Back Row: Bo Barnes, Donald Boucher, Pat Keenan, Roger Snortland, Charles Leonard, Jay Adams.

The Comets finished their season with a win over Bethel College at home.

Another fun thing to find in the Exponent was an article on the breakdown of Student Fees from 1967.

Today, our Student Fees for a typical semester is about $600, $1200 for the year.

Back in 1967, it was $31 for a semester, $62 for a year.

Lab Costs:

Library – $4.00

Course Fee: $5.20

Placement: $0.30

Health Fee: $2.50

Total Lab Fee: $12.00

Activity Fee Breakdowns:

Athletics: $3.50

Band: $0.80

Choir: $0.60

Lyceum: $2.00

Men’s Intramural: $0.20

Exponent: $1.00

College Mill: $2.20

Student Senate: $2.00

Women’s Intramural: $0.20

Dramatics: $0.80

Postal Service: $0.35

Debate: $0.35

Campus Center: $5.00

Activities Total: $19.00

Grand Total: $31.00

Using an inflation calculator online, $62/year back then would be $458.17 today.

Keep in mind, 1967 didn’t have the high demands of technology fees and many more clubs/organizations to operate on today’s campus, also the campus size and makeup have considerably changed in 50 years.  Consider the additions of Agassiz Hall (which was being discussed as a possibility in this paper too!) and the additions to the campus center, Lewy Lee Fieldhouse, and Wellness Center today. It is pretty neat to look back at these costs and see how much has changed in today’s college landscape when compared to today’s needs for our campus.

Look ahead to a quick preview tomorrow on Comet Pride Friday for a full weekend of games for FB, WBB, and MBB!

Comet Weekend Review

Greetings Comet Nation!

I hope you had a fantastic weekend.  Here’s the latest rundown of the Comets and their battles over the weekend:

Comet Volleyball:

Our VB team traveled to Presentation College on Friday to begin conference play and came close in a few sets to turning it in their favor.  We fell in two very close sets in back to back 23-25 losses that the Saints snuck away from in victory.  Our Lady Comets came back with an edge to take the third set away from PC in a 25-18 affair, only to watch the steam run out and fall in the final set 12-25 to PC.  Catch the stats and more at MSUComets.com!

Comet Football:

Our Comets FB team also traveled to a SD foe at Madison to face Dakota State on Saturday night.  The Comets kept it close in the first half, only being down 21-10 after 30 minutes of play.  DSU turned it up in the second half, scoring another 27 points in the second half, while the Comets got on the board with another 6 in the 4th and finished the game in a 48-16 score. Catch all your stats here at MSUComets.com!

Comet Baseball:

The Baseball team had a game against U-Jamestown scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but wet weather postponed that game to a later date. It was dry enough however to get some games in against Viterbo on Sunday, which the Comets won in 6-4 and 7-1 victories in the doubleheader at home.  Look for stats and a recap to come soon at MSUComets.com. Nice pair of wins, fellas!

We have a lot of JV VB and Baseball action taking place this week, plus VB this weekend at Dakota State & Bellevue, and of course FB is at home this weekend vs Dickinson State. Check out the Comet Athletics website schedule on places and dates for the JV games coming up. Tuesday night our JV VB squad will compete against Concordia College at home. Baseball has two games against NDSU’s club team on Tuesday and Thursday in Fargo. Also of note, the JV Football team played against Concordia College yesterday, but I don’t have a score on that one to share yet.

Have a great week!

Farmers Bowl Weekend Review, Plus Volleyball and Softball Too!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a great weekend for our fall tradition, the Farmers Bowl, this past Saturday. We also have Comet VB on the road in action, plus Comet Softball up in Canada for a doubleheader up there. Let’s get to the results!

The Farmers Bowl Day started off with the Farmers Bowl 5K, won by Comet MBB player Konrad Bueckers in a time of 19:33.  A full list of results is up at this page here.

The Farmers Bowl parade rolled through downtown Mayville, en route to the college around 10:30am.

Captain Comet rolled on his Comet Cruiser and followed alongside the WBB team, who were all piled up and around a truck for their part in the parade.

Our Comets then took on the Warriors of Sterling College in the Farmers Bowl.  It was a tough battle throughout the day, as the Comets took on the #14 team in the pre-season ranks in the NAIA.  Things were close to start, with the Comets only down 23-12 at the half. Sterling answered with some more scores and found themselves ahead 44 to 24.  The Comets made a charge with two more scores and some 2 point conversions to close the gap to 44-40, but it was not enough to capture a victory in the end.

Some bright spots for the Comets are the performances from new QB #18 Creighton Pfau, who in two games is now leading the country with 495 yards/game as an average, with 830 of those 990 total yards in passing!  Pfau is also a basketball player for the Comets, coming out of West Fargo, ND, and is in his first season of playing football here.  Both Comet squads are fortunate to have such a talent!

With great passing comes great receiving efforts too, and Joshua Portillo had a great game of 144 yards on 8 catches and 1 TD. Trent Momon had 114 yards on 5 catches. Adrian Carillo had 65 yards, and Jacob Lawrence had a nice collection of 61 yards and a TD in the end.

Defensively, Douglas Koepplin led with 12 tackles and Donte Stevens had 8, followed by Jason Holmes with 7 and an INT.

Catch your full recap here at MSUComets.com!

Our Comets will take on Dakota State down in Madison, SD this Saturday.

Comets Volleyball battles 4 Teams in Nebraska

Our Lady Comets Volleyball squad took to the road again, facing Mount Marty & Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, followed by McPherson College and William Penn on Saturday down in Omaha, NE.

The Comets fell to MM in 4 sets, winning 25-15, then falling 17-25, and two back to back losses of 23-25.

DWU was also a tough one, losing 26-28 in a close one, then 19-25 and 15-25.

Saturday’s action against McPherson was tight throughout, in a 25-18 win, 15-25 and 16-25 losses, coming back with a 28-26 win and falling shy in the final 5th set, 14-16.

WP was their final matchup in a 0-3 battle, falling 23-25, 19-25 and 22-25.  All in all, there were a lot of close sets that could have went the Comets’ way over that weekend stretch.

Catch all the individual stats of our Comets at MSUComets.com!

Comet Softball Wins Big Doubleheader in Fall Ball Action Over Conference Foe

Our Lady Comets Softball team traveled up to Brandon, Manitoba to take part in a special opening game ceremony for the new Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex there.  Neufeld was a former Dickinson State softball player who passed away a few years ago.  The Comets were honored to take part in the first games against DSU, who have been a tough foe for the Comets in recent years. The Comets came out with two victories on the day, with 14-6 and 8-0 victories to come home with!  A Job Well Done, Lady Comets!

Thanks to all who came and supported the Farmers Bowl Auction on Saturday, too!  Thousands of dollars were raised to help support the MSU Foundation for student scholarships here!

Comet Throwback Thursday: Farmers Bowl Caps!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It’s Farmers Bowl Week!  It wouldn’t be a Mayville State Farmers Bowl without a great little tradition of wearing your MSU Farmers Bowl ‘farmers cap’!

The Farmers Bowl goes back to 1995 and for every year, the Farmers Bowl caps have popped up and been given away by our Alumni Association before the game.  A limited number of these caps have been given away, and today’s picture is a small collection of those caps!

They have varied from being white with a Comet Blue brim, to being navy blue, khaki, grey, and in recent years, just a straight-up Comet Blue cap all-around.

The caps have become a favorite tradition to wear at the game itself each year, as the entire day has been lined up with fun-filled activities that are centered around the big game.

The Farmers Bowl 5K usually starts the day off, followed by a Farmers Bowl parade, then a corn cob & hot dog feed leading up to the big game, finishing the day with a fantastic silent and live auction.

Past MSU President, Dr. Ellen Chaffee, got in the spirit years ago by driving a tractor in one of the first Farmers Bowl Parades!

This year, we’ll have the Farmers Bowl Field Frenzy 5K to start the big day at 8am, beginning and finishing the race by Old Main.  You can register beforehand at the Wellness Center to pickup your bib number and backpack if you participate. Cost is $20 and the form can be downloaded here.  The race is free for MSU students!  Money raised will support the Farmers Bowl scholarship fundraising efforts that day.

The Farmers Bowl Parade will begin downtown in Mayville and finish by the college.  This year, there will not be a corn cob/hot dog feed before the game.

Be sure to stop by the Bookstore before the game to get your Farmers Bowl cap and t-shirt this year!

The Comets face off against Sterling College in the Farmers Bowl game itself at Jerome Berg Field at 1pm.
It will be the home opener for the Comets, who are coming off a close loss last week and want to win a big one at home this season in front of Comet Nation!

Following the game, you can take part in the Farmers Bowl Auction with silent bidding and live bidding, starting at 5pm.

Mark your calendars for this Saturday and take in another fun-filled Farmers Bowl Day!

Comet Pride Friday: Comet FB Falls in Close Opener, Farmers Bowl Next Week!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday to you, and welcome to September as well!

Our Comet Football squad just played their first game last night against Buena Vista University.

Things were tied up 7-7 at first, then BV exploded to a 28-7 lead.  The Comets fought back in the 2nd half, putting together some points to close the gap to 31-21, then finally with a last minute surge to come up with another 6 points, only to fall when the buzzer sounded in a 31-27 score.

Of note in the stats department was new QB Creighton Pfau, who threw for 4 TD’s, 394 yards and was 31 for 51 on attempts. Pfau connected with Trent Momon for 3 of those TD’s, with Trent collecting 147 yards on 10 catches. Chris Pope snagged the other TD for the Comets, with his 8 reception, 117 yard night. Defensively, Austin Robb had 6 tackles.

Catch the official release here at MSUComets.com!

The Comets will have a little more than a week to prepare for their home opener for the Farmers Bowl on Sept 9th, facing off against Sterling College at 1pm. It will be a good home opener for the Comets with the traditionally strong Farmers Bowl crowd in their presence and with awesome support from our students!

Farmers Bowl activities kick off on Sept 9th with the Field Frenzy 5K Run/Walk, starting at 8am. You can venture out around the campus of Mayville State, even getting the chance to run through Jerome Berg Field and by Scott Berry Field as well, doing so twice and the out-and-back course.  Fee is $20 for participants but it is free for students to do as well with their Student ID. The first 100 participants will get a special Farmers Bowl drawstring backpack once again!

10:30am will be the start of the great tradition of the Farmers Bowl parade in downtown Mayville, ending back at the stadium. Don’t forget about the Farmers Market either, which has been taking place every Saturday this summer down at Island Park from 9am to 12pm.

The game will begin at 1pm, followed by another great Farmers Bowl tradition, the Farmers Bowl Auction.  Both Silent and Live Auctions will take place.

You can perhaps win the bidding wars on items like this “Comet Cruiser” bike:

Check out all the items listed so far on the MSU Farmers Bowl Facebook page!

Tickets for the Farmers Bowl Auction event are $30.

You can get tickets here and also find out more about all the events taking place right here!

There is no Comet Action this weekend, we have VB taking the weekend off from some games and of course, FB just played last night, so no game this Saturday.  Keep up to speed with what’s coming up at MSUComets.com!
