Magnificent Monday: Cap Is the Champ!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

That was one heck of a thrilling battle in the NSAA Mascot Challenge, wasn’t it?

At first, we had to face 2 teams in a three-way contest in the quarterfinal round, combating both Presentation College and Waldorf University.

We came out ahead with a 314 to 291 to 201 win over PC and Waldorf, respectively.

In the Semifinals, we faced off against the Jimmies from the University of Jamestown. That was an extremely closely fought battle as well, bringing back memories of classic basketball battles between the two schools.  In the end, we marched into the championship game with a 470 to 450 win by only 20 votes!

In the Finals, it had all the markings of a classic: Two state schools, both started at the same time, both with heated rivalries between them for decades.  Yep, it was another Mayville State vs Valley City State battle! This time, its for the Mascot Challenge crown, and Comet Nation came out in full force!

The battle waged early in the voting when it began on Friday.  VCSU took a good lead, only to see MSU surge ahead within a couple of hours.  It seemed to lock up in a 50/50 battle that ensued for most of Friday and with VCSU holding a 51% to 49% margin on Saturday.

Comet fans came out in full swing though, tweeting and retweeting and retweeting some more, drawing us neck to neck with our foes in a 50/50 even split.

When the smoke cleared and the buzzer sounded, it was Captain Comet with the victory, 777 to 776!  A simple vote added by ONE awesome Comet fan to decide the tourney!

Captain Comet wants to THANK YOU for all your support in this exciting social media blitz of a tournament!

From Al Larson to Tex Holden and all the others who have donned a cape and mask and just plain got SUPER-EXCITED with Comet Pride to cheer on our Comets throughout the years, this is YOUR victory!

We’ll really need your support now, as the National NAIA-SIDA Mascot Challenge begins today (Monday, April 9th) and we’ll face off against other conference champions nationally.

Look to Twitter soon on when to vote and start Retweeting away to spread the word about Mayville State!

Once again, THANK YOU, COMET NATION!  YOU are the true CHAMPIONS!

Hail To Our Comets!

Comet Throwback Thursday: The Successful Run of Coach Kaiser in Cometville

Greetings, Comet Nation!

In the stories of famed college coaches at Mayville State, the names of Jerome Berg, Lewy Lee, Al Meyer, and Scott Berry come to mind immediately.  Those names and faces are fresh among the current Alumni of today.

However, there was one successful coach that had a short, but highly successful tenure here at Mayville State, before all of them started their own legacies.

He had a great influence on the college at a time when it first got its own official nickname, and helped build a foundation for the Lewy Lee era that was yet to arrive in 1930. He not only witnessed the college getting its new nickname of the Comets in 1925, but also was there for the grand opening of the old 1929 Gymnasium that used to be right next to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. He was the only coach to coach the Comets in the former gym inside Old Main, and the 1929 Gym.

The coach I’m talking about is Harrison Kaiser.

Harrison Kaiser was the AD and head coach of 4 sports here, all wrapped into one duty, starting in 1924 and ending in 1930.

Per the records listed in the yearbooks of the library, I was able to find the following:

1924 Football: 4-1

1925 Football: 4-3

1925-26 Basketball: 12-4 (possible title?)

1926 Baseball: unknown record, but Conference title was listed as being won.

1926 Football: 1-4

1926-27 Basketball: 6-3, 2nd in Conference

1927 Baseball: 4-1, Conference Title

1927 Football: 2-2

1927-28 Basketball: 8-8

1928 Baseball: 3-0-1, Conference Title

1928 Football: 2-2-1

1928-29 Basketball: 5-4

1929 Baseball: 11-0-1, Conference Title

1929 Football: 1-2-1

1929-30 Basketball: 5-7

1930 Baseball: 9-2-1, possible Conference Title

That’s 3 Baseball crowns, with a possible 4th, plus 1 possible Basketball title and one runner-up season.

Coach Kaiser had an overall sports coaching record here of 77-43-5.

Most notably, his Baseball coaching record was 27-3-3.

With the ties listed in baseball games, the games were called on account of darkness and the games ended in ties.

One peculiar tie happened in the 1929 Baseball season.

It appears to me to be the first international contest between our school and a team from another country.

A travelling team from Cuba, listed as the Cuban Pirates, played right here at Mayville in a tight, 4-4 contest, which ended due to running out of daylight.

Another cool bit of history was Coach Kaiser starting up the first Mayville State Teachers College Track Team.  The team was assembled in the spring of 1926.

The track team stories in the yearbooks didn’t list much for meets and records, but they did take 2nd one year at a conference meet and they also had an all-school meet to help determine who would make the squads back then. Some years, each class of Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors would compete in an intramural format.

Looking back at this era of the 1920’s and under Coach Kaiser’s helm, the Athletics department at Mayville State was laying a solid foundation of success for years to come!

Comet Weekend Review

Greetings, Comet Nation!

This weekend we had 3 games over Friday and Saturday in Comet Basketball action. The Men played two games in the Husky Hoops Classic down at St Cloud State in St Cloud, MN, while the Women travelled eastward to Bemidji State at Bemidji, MN to take on BSU in another exhibition match-up.

Comet Men Compete in Husky Hoops Classic

The Men fought very hard on Friday night against a tough NCAA Division II team when they faced the host team, St Cloud State.  The Comets were a bit outmatched in size but still found a way to bring the score within reach at times.  Turnovers proved to be a costly measure and we fell 67 to 51 in the end.

Saturday’s game at SCSU was a better game overall than Friday’s, as the Comets took on the St Scholastica Saints out of Duluth, MN.  The Men took the lead right away and never looked back, even putting off a 2nd half surge by the Saints and retaining their lead towards the end for their 2nd win on the season.  Overall record now is 2-2, although 4 games have been in exhibition play against Division I & II teams (U-Mary, USD, Minot State and SCSU).

Catch the recaps here at MSUComets.com!

Lady Comets Battle It Out with BSU

For the Lady Comets, they had their game at the same time of the Men’s game on Saturday, which probably made some Comet fans from afar open up two different windows on their computers to catch both games taking place. After BSU climbed up to an early lead, the Comets came back in full force and captured their own lead for most of the game.  A 4th quarter surge by BSU proved to be too much for the Lady Comets in the end, as a battle in free throws decided the game in the final few seconds of play.  BSU came out ahead by one, 63-62. Catch the recap here at MSUComets.com.

You can catch both Comet teams in action at HOME tomorrow night, as they both take on the University of Minnesota-Morris, Lady Comets start their game at 5:30, Men at 7:30.

Toys For Tickets:

The Lady Comets are once again doing a “Toys for Tickets” campaign this year, so please bring an unwrapped toy for free admission to the games this Tuesday! The campaign will continue for the Dec 1st and Dec 2nd home games versus Presentation College and the University of Jamestown, respectively.

Comet Weekend Review: A Tough 2 Days for 3 Comet Teams

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a very difficult time this past Friday and Saturday for 3 of our Comet teams.

Friday’s action began with the Lady Comet Basketball team facing the NDSU Bison in Fargo in exhibition play.

The Comets struggled to get their high powered offense going and the Bison, playing with early season struggles of their own, were able to climb ahead in the battle.  In the end, the Comets fell to the Bison, 87 to 43.  The loss didn’t affect the overall record due to the exhibition match-up. Catch the recap here at MSUComets.com.

It was a short trip back home for a big NAIA match-up between #3 Concordia University and the Lady Comets on Saturday. It was another struggling day of hoops for us, as the #3 team was showing why they were ranked near the top. Turnovers seems to be an issue all weekend, and things didn’t sharpen up well as the visiting Bulldogs won the game 93 to 58. Catch the review here at MSUComets.com.

At roughly the same time that our Lady Comets were playing at home, the Comet Football team was finishing up their season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State. DSU came out strong right away, scoring 8 touchdowns in the first half, and ten overall in the game.  The Comets were able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, leaving the game 70-7 in favor of the Blue Hawks.  Read up on the game here at MSUComets.com.

To wrap up the day, the Comet Men’s Basketball team travelled to Vermillion, SD to take on the USD Coyotes, coached by former Comet MBB coach Craig Smith.  The Comets were able to keep it as close as 2 points when the score read 31-29 in the first half. However, USD took control and had an advantage in rebounding overall, turning many of those into some extended runs.  In the end, the Comets fell in this exhibition match-up, 87-59.  On a bright note, Daniel Lindgren led all scorers with 18 on the night.  See the review here at MSUComets.com.

Now that Comet Football has ended, it’s ALL BASKETBALL for a few months.

The MBB team will play Minot State on Tuesday, with Friday/Saturday action down in St Cloud, MN vs St Cloud State and St Scholastica, respectively. Our Lady Comets will travel to Bemidji State in Bemidji, MN on Saturday as well for an exhibition game there.

The Men are currently at 1-2 overall, while the Lady Comets are sitting at 4-1 overall.

Comet Pride Friday: Weekend Preview

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday to you!

We have 4 games going on this weekend: 1 today, and 3 tomorrow!

Today: Our Lady Comets Basketball team will travel an hour to the south and play NDSU in an exhibition game. If you’re unable to make it there, the game should be broadcast on Midco Sports Network and ESPN3, plus WatchESPN.com online. Radio broadcasts will be on 92.7 FM and 1660 AM. It will be a great test for the Lady Comets tonight, since Saturday’s game will be a challenge too.

Saturday’s Games:

Football: Our men will take the field for the last time this season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State on Saturday at 1pm Mountain time, 2pm Central time. DSU is 7-0 in the NSAA, 8-1 overall and ranked #12 in the country. It will be a tough battle ahead for the Comets, as we’ve battled through injuries and a series of very hard contests this season.

Women’s Basketball: You can catch your Lady Comets on Saturday at home against Concordia University, which is ranked #3 in the nation right now in the NAIA. The Lady Comets have been hot at home as they’ve come out of the blocks in a 4-0 start on the Lewy Lee hardwood. Game time is 2pm. Come out to support our Lady Comets and give them a huge home court advantage!

Men’s Basketball: Our Comet Men will travel to Vermillion, SD to take on the University of South Dakota in an exhibition game as well on Saturday night at 6pm. The head coach of USD is former Comet MBB coach, Craig Smith, who led the Comets to their greatest success in program history in 2007 when the Comets reached the NAIA championship game and were national runners-up. The Comet Men are currently 1-2 on the season so far, and the test against USD will give them a great challenge to prepare for the conference season that begins shortly.

The Football and WBB games on Saturday can be watched live through our Live Portal site . We’ll be providing the live feed from home, while DSU will be providing the live feed from DSU.

The MBB game will be provided live through USD .

Be sure to catch the game at home on Saturday if you can, and catch the Comets online from afar! It is certainly a great time to be a Comet fan with so many options to watch all your teams from a distance!

Farmers Bowl Weekend Review, Plus Volleyball and Softball Too!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a great weekend for our fall tradition, the Farmers Bowl, this past Saturday. We also have Comet VB on the road in action, plus Comet Softball up in Canada for a doubleheader up there. Let’s get to the results!

The Farmers Bowl Day started off with the Farmers Bowl 5K, won by Comet MBB player Konrad Bueckers in a time of 19:33.  A full list of results is up at this page here.

The Farmers Bowl parade rolled through downtown Mayville, en route to the college around 10:30am.

Captain Comet rolled on his Comet Cruiser and followed alongside the WBB team, who were all piled up and around a truck for their part in the parade.

Our Comets then took on the Warriors of Sterling College in the Farmers Bowl.  It was a tough battle throughout the day, as the Comets took on the #14 team in the pre-season ranks in the NAIA.  Things were close to start, with the Comets only down 23-12 at the half. Sterling answered with some more scores and found themselves ahead 44 to 24.  The Comets made a charge with two more scores and some 2 point conversions to close the gap to 44-40, but it was not enough to capture a victory in the end.

Some bright spots for the Comets are the performances from new QB #18 Creighton Pfau, who in two games is now leading the country with 495 yards/game as an average, with 830 of those 990 total yards in passing!  Pfau is also a basketball player for the Comets, coming out of West Fargo, ND, and is in his first season of playing football here.  Both Comet squads are fortunate to have such a talent!

With great passing comes great receiving efforts too, and Joshua Portillo had a great game of 144 yards on 8 catches and 1 TD. Trent Momon had 114 yards on 5 catches. Adrian Carillo had 65 yards, and Jacob Lawrence had a nice collection of 61 yards and a TD in the end.

Defensively, Douglas Koepplin led with 12 tackles and Donte Stevens had 8, followed by Jason Holmes with 7 and an INT.

Catch your full recap here at MSUComets.com!

Our Comets will take on Dakota State down in Madison, SD this Saturday.

Comets Volleyball battles 4 Teams in Nebraska

Our Lady Comets Volleyball squad took to the road again, facing Mount Marty & Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, followed by McPherson College and William Penn on Saturday down in Omaha, NE.

The Comets fell to MM in 4 sets, winning 25-15, then falling 17-25, and two back to back losses of 23-25.

DWU was also a tough one, losing 26-28 in a close one, then 19-25 and 15-25.

Saturday’s action against McPherson was tight throughout, in a 25-18 win, 15-25 and 16-25 losses, coming back with a 28-26 win and falling shy in the final 5th set, 14-16.

WP was their final matchup in a 0-3 battle, falling 23-25, 19-25 and 22-25.  All in all, there were a lot of close sets that could have went the Comets’ way over that weekend stretch.

Catch all the individual stats of our Comets at MSUComets.com!

Comet Softball Wins Big Doubleheader in Fall Ball Action Over Conference Foe

Our Lady Comets Softball team traveled up to Brandon, Manitoba to take part in a special opening game ceremony for the new Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex there.  Neufeld was a former Dickinson State softball player who passed away a few years ago.  The Comets were honored to take part in the first games against DSU, who have been a tough foe for the Comets in recent years. The Comets came out with two victories on the day, with 14-6 and 8-0 victories to come home with!  A Job Well Done, Lady Comets!

Thanks to all who came and supported the Farmers Bowl Auction on Saturday, too!  Thousands of dollars were raised to help support the MSU Foundation for student scholarships here!

Comet Volleyball Season Begins!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

The 2017-18 sports seasons are now underway, as the Comet Volleyball squad is on their way out to Denver, Colorado for a 3 day stint of action at the Johnson & Wales University Tournament.

Thursday’s games will be:

12pm: Rocky Mountain College

4pm: University of Providence

Friday, the Comets will face:

4:30pm: Embry-Riddle University

7pm: Johnson & Wales University

Saturday, the Comets wrap it up against Montana State-Northern at 9am.

Coach Lindsey Johnson brings back her same squad of assistant coaches in Michelle Warren as Assistant Coach and Katie Wangberg as Graduate Assistant Coach, plus a lot of new faces on the squad.

19 ladies have filled up the Comet roster this year, in which almost half are incoming freshmen. Most of the team comes from ND and MN, but also has players from CO, ID, and Alaska too!

Get a full look at the team at MSUComets.com right here!

In the North Star Athletic Association Pre-Season Coaches Poll, the Comets were picked 8th, with Viterbo being picked as the top team for the third straight year.  Our conference is one of the toughest in the country, so the Comets have a challenging season ahead of them when it comes to conference play.

The season starts on the road for quite a few weeks, before the Comets have a home stretch in the middle of the season.  First home action for the Comets will be September 26th, when they face Trinity Bible College at 6pm. The next 8 games after that one will all be at home, through October 24th.

Comets Battle Jimmies in Two Places to Complete Series, Activities Set for This Week on Campus

Greetings, Comet Nation!

We’re in the final days of Mayville State Mania in the month of April, and also near the end of the regular season games for Baseball and Softball. Let’s see how we did yesterday…

Our Comet teams had to finish out their weekend series with the University of Jamestown Jimmies in two different towns to complete their weekend series of games, which were postponed due to weather.

After being spoiled with some days in the 50’s and 60’s the last few weeks, we have had to suffer through some snow that came its way into the region on Sunday and caused Baseball to travel to Aberdeen, SD to play their games, while Softball scheduled an afternoon set down in Wahpeton, ND.

While playing the Jimmies on neutral ground, it didn’t go the way the Comets wanted it to.

In Baseball action, the Jimmies got the best of the Comets, twice, to take the 4 game series 3-1. The first game was a close contest that went into extra innings, with the Jimmies coming out on top after 10 innings of play, 7-6.  The final game ended with UJ eeking out a low-scoring, 3-1 win.  The Comets now sit in 3rd place in the conference behind Bellevue in front and Valley City State in 2nd.

In Softball action, our Lady Comets were unfortunately shut-out in back to back games, with a 6-0 loss and an 8-0 loss to finish their series against the Jimmies. We’re still in the middle of the conference with a 11-13 record and 17-23 overall.

Look for updates and full recaps soon at MSUComets.com.

Due to the wet weather we are currently having, the NDSU vs Mayville State game that was set for tonight at Newman Outdoor Field has been cancelled and will not be made up.  This game was set to be televised tonight on the local BEK Sports channel 4.2.

Upcoming action for both squads will be this Friday and Saturday, as Baseball takes on Winnipeg in a 4 game stretch at Home, while Softball takes on Presentation College at Home as well on those same days.

Before the Baseball and Softball games start on Saturday, but sure to catch the MSU Comets Football Spring Game, held this year at Jerome Berg Field at 9am!

Come and get a glimpse of the new Coach Thom era that has begun at Cometville.

First, the Comets received enough votes this week to become ranked at #22 in the country in the NAIA!

This spectacular season is something to behold for Comet Nation, as we’ve collected an impressive 33 wins and have just 6 losses on the season so far. We’re 14-2 in the conference, in 2nd place behind #4 Bellevue, and are currently riding a 15 game winning streak.  Our Comets are tops in the nation on the mound with a 2.77 ERA as well!

The regular season is wrapping up within the next couple of weeks and the post-season begins shortly after.

Brady Nygaard Selected as NSAA and NAIA Player of the Week

Congrats also goes out to Brady Nygaard, who has been selected both the NSAA Player of the Week, and the NAIA’s National Player of the Week too!

Brady had a stellar week of performing at the plate last week in the games against Dakota Wesleyan and Dickinson State.

He went 10 for 15 (!) for a batting average of .667 on the week.

Talk about some damage he did with those 10 hits:

Brady smashed 3 Home Runs

He had 14 RBI

Collected 5 Walks

Scored 11 times himself

He had a Double to add to the list as well

The homegrown Mayville, ND talent has been a great asset to the Comets lineup at first base and has been proven to be a threat every time he comes to the plate.

For the season so far, he is batting .393, has boosted 11 home runs over the fence, and has drove in 56 RBI.

A Job Well Done, Brady!
