Farmers Bowl Weekend Review, Plus Volleyball and Softball Too!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a great weekend for our fall tradition, the Farmers Bowl, this past Saturday. We also have Comet VB on the road in action, plus Comet Softball up in Canada for a doubleheader up there. Let’s get to the results!

The Farmers Bowl Day started off with the Farmers Bowl 5K, won by Comet MBB player Konrad Bueckers in a time of 19:33.  A full list of results is up at this page here.

The Farmers Bowl parade rolled through downtown Mayville, en route to the college around 10:30am.

Captain Comet rolled on his Comet Cruiser and followed alongside the WBB team, who were all piled up and around a truck for their part in the parade.

Our Comets then took on the Warriors of Sterling College in the Farmers Bowl.  It was a tough battle throughout the day, as the Comets took on the #14 team in the pre-season ranks in the NAIA.  Things were close to start, with the Comets only down 23-12 at the half. Sterling answered with some more scores and found themselves ahead 44 to 24.  The Comets made a charge with two more scores and some 2 point conversions to close the gap to 44-40, but it was not enough to capture a victory in the end.

Some bright spots for the Comets are the performances from new QB #18 Creighton Pfau, who in two games is now leading the country with 495 yards/game as an average, with 830 of those 990 total yards in passing!  Pfau is also a basketball player for the Comets, coming out of West Fargo, ND, and is in his first season of playing football here.  Both Comet squads are fortunate to have such a talent!

With great passing comes great receiving efforts too, and Joshua Portillo had a great game of 144 yards on 8 catches and 1 TD. Trent Momon had 114 yards on 5 catches. Adrian Carillo had 65 yards, and Jacob Lawrence had a nice collection of 61 yards and a TD in the end.

Defensively, Douglas Koepplin led with 12 tackles and Donte Stevens had 8, followed by Jason Holmes with 7 and an INT.

Our Comets will take on Dakota State down in Madison, SD this Saturday.

Comets Volleyball battles 4 Teams in Nebraska

Our Lady Comets Volleyball squad took to the road again, facing Mount Marty & Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, followed by McPherson College and William Penn on Saturday down in Omaha, NE.

The Comets fell to MM in 4 sets, winning 25-15, then falling 17-25, and two back to back losses of 23-25.

DWU was also a tough one, losing 26-28 in a close one, then 19-25 and 15-25.

Saturday’s action against McPherson was tight throughout, in a 25-18 win, 15-25 and 16-25 losses, coming back with a 28-26 win and falling shy in the final 5th set, 14-16.

WP was their final matchup in a 0-3 battle, falling 23-25, 19-25 and 22-25.  All in all, there were a lot of close sets that could have went the Comets’ way over that weekend stretch.

Comet Softball Wins Big Doubleheader in Fall Ball Action Over Conference Foe

Our Lady Comets Softball team traveled up to Brandon, Manitoba to take part in a special opening game ceremony for the new Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex there.  Neufeld was a former Dickinson State softball player who passed away a few years ago.  The Comets were honored to take part in the first games against DSU, who have been a tough foe for the Comets in recent years. The Comets came out with two victories on the day, with 14-6 and 8-0 victories to come home with!  A Job Well Done, Lady Comets!

Thanks to all who came and supported the Farmers Bowl Auction on Saturday, too!  Thousands of dollars were raised to help support the MSU Foundation for student scholarships here!

Winning Wednesday: Comets Claim Championship, Secure Spot to Nationals, Plus Softball News!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It’s a Great Day To Be A Comet: We’re the NSAA Champs!

WOW! What a truly Winning Wednesday it is today!  Our Comets Baseball team has done a lot since Friday, having quite the NSAA Tourney to endure.

It all began with a win on Friday over Waldorf, moving them to a game against Valley City State on Saturday. The Comets fell in their game to VCSU, moving into a loser-out scenario against Waldorf once again. In that game, we prevailed over Waldorf, to then face off against Valley City, this time needing to beat them twice. This would take nearly a day and a half to do…

After beating VCSU on Sunday, we had to play Monday after an 11am game between Bellevue and Jamestown. The BU vs UJ game went into a rain delay, pushing back that game to late afternoon on Monday to resume.  The Comets still had to play VCSU after that game, with our game starting around 9:30pm.

We played to the wee hours of Tuesday morning, finishing the game at close to 1am with the big victory over VCSU to move to the championship game.

Keep in mind, the games were being played in Valley City, so the Comets had to travel back to Mayville, arriving about 3am, only to turn out and leave around 8am to play again.  UJ only had a half-hour to travel home, and a half-hour to get to the ballpark at VCSU.

Tuesday afternoon proved to be another nail biter between the two conference foes that perennially seem to be in contention for the conference crown each year. UJ beat Bellevue twice, the #2 team in the country, to get to the championship game.  After 5 games in 4 days with their backs to the wall, the Comets had quite the challenge ahead of them.

In true Coach Berry fashion, because let’s face the facts: Coach Berry’s been through a lot of these situations with 1050+ wins, the Comets came prepared.

We went up 2-0 and fell back one when UJ clipped off 3 runs to take the lead. However, the Comets hung in there and even with 2 outs in the 7th inning, we went on a hit streak to drive in 3 more runs to take the lead for good at 5-3.  After the Comets captured 2 outs in the 9th, UJ had the chance to tie with a blast to left field…only to watch Dondrei Hubbard save the ball from going over the fence, knocking it back in after being unable to catch it.  (I think he had a cape on to jump that high!) The Comets secured the win with the final out when a grounder went to SS Riley Nelson and over to first for the final play to end the series and crown the Comets as your NSAA Champions!

Find your recap here at MSUComets.com.

It was a thrilling end to a thrilling tournament.  Hats off to UJ on a fine season and a fine run by their team as well, it was just another chapter in a very exciting story that our NSAA tournament created this year.

The Comets are now 46-10, with the most wins in school history for the program, eclipsing the record of 42, beating that mark in the NSAA tourney.  That is quite the winning percentage to enter the National tournament with.  Regional play will begin Monday, with selections taking place later this week for where the Comets will be headed to.

A JOB WELL DONE, COMETS!

Softball Ends in Heartbreaker, Baseball Fights Onward in Playoff Picture

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a wild and crazy weekend in the NSAA Playoffs for both Lady Comet Softball and Comet Baseball.

Softball had a stretch of games that ended in a pitchers duel and a close loss to a nationally ranked team to complete their season’s run.

Baseball won right away on Friday to end up with a loss on Saturday, followed by a win later in the day to take on Valley City on Sunday.  An eventual win forced a 2nd game to be played today.

There’s a lot to break down, so let’s start with Softball first:

Lady Comets Endure Day 1, End on Day 2 of NSAA Playoffs

The first matchup for the Lady Comets was #4 seed Viterbo, which was a tough loss to take. After having a 4-1 lead and then a 4-2 lead, the V-Hawks clipped off 3 hits to drive in 3 runs in the final inning to win 5-4 over the Comets.

We had to play Waldorf immediately after, and the Comets were on a mission to win. A 3-run homer by Nina Gurgian set the pace for the Comets, as they went up 3-1 in the first and eventually climbed their way to a 10-1 win to stay alive for Day 2. Catch the stats and more from Day 1 here at MSUComets.com.

Day 2 had the Comets continue to be on the winning side, facing off against the Viterbo V-Hawks a second time.  This time it was a different story, as the Comets hammered away at the Hawks and took a 10-0 lead. Keeping the V-Hawks scoreless was Hailey Kravetz, who secured the win after 5 innings and the 10-run rule.

This moved the Comets into the Bracket A Championship to face off against #23 Bellevue. After Bellevue’s Erin Sharpe, the nation’s leading home run hitter smacked one over the fence, our own Daisy Macias evened things up with one of her own. The game battled onward with a 1-1 tie and went into the 8th inning, when Bellevue clipped a single to drive in a run to win the game. The Comets season came to an end, as we finished with a 22-26 overall record, and improving from 13 wins last season to 22 this year. It has been about 13 years since the Lady Comets won more than 20 games, so this season was definitely one to remember and one that saw the program moving ahead into the future.   A Job Well Done, Lady Comets, on a terrific season!

Catch up on Day 2’s stats and action here at MSUComets.com.

Comets Baseball Has A Wild Weekend, Play Again Today Against Valley City State

The Baseball team’s post-season began in Valley City on Friday, as they took on Waldorf.  Things were close early on, but the Comets exploded at the plate and rushed 14 runs in on their way to a 14-5 victory.

They had to face rival Valley City on Saturday at Valley’s home turf.  Things were tight throughout with a 3-3 tie, until VCSU grabbed the lead and won 4-3 in the end.

The Comets then had to face Waldorf again in a loser-out bracket on Saturday, climbing up to a victory with a 9-3 win to stay alive and move onward…to face Valley City again on Sunday.

Sunday’s game against Valley City had the Comets in a situation where they had to beat Valley twice, once on Sunday, and then again for Monday’s game if they should win.  The Comets did prevail in their game on Sunday, with another tight battle in a 5-4 win.  The win puts the Comets into another game against Valley City for today at 2pm.

Hard time keeping up with all the games and stats? Catch it all at MSUComets.com on the Baseball page.

You can catch the live feed of the game from Valley City State here at the live link.

If we win today, we then take on the winner of Bellevue vs Jamestown for the NSAA Championship.

If you’re able to, go down to Valley City and cheer on your Comets today!

Mayville State University Collegiate DECA Participates in International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California

From April 19th through April 24st, 15 Mayville State University Collegiate DECA students participated in the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The annual conference provides the opportunity for students to compete against others from all over the world in business specific events. MSU students had to qualify for the Anaheim conference at the state competition held in Fargo, North Dakota this past February.

Collegiate DECA’s overlying mission is to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”  MSU Collegiate DECA is open to students in all majors. Students spend many hours fundraising, but also receive generous support from the Larson Leadership Program and the “After Hours” social events organized by the Division of Business.

As a team, the Mayville State University Chapter received the Community Service Award which is designed to recognize Collegiate DECA chapters for civic activities performed on campus and in their communities. Maddie Gallardo was recognized individually for her contributions to the state of North Dakota as a ND Collegiate DECA Vice President with the Outstanding State Leadership ribbon.

The MSU team received a chapter leadership award and all 15 students received individual leadership recognition on the stage at the Anaheim Hilton ballroom during the Leadership Passport Awards ceremony. The Collegiate DECA Leadership Passport Program encourages local chapters and individual members to plan activities and participate in events that enhance the experiences of members. The leadership passport rewards action taken by members and chapters that build personal and professional skill sets focused around the organizations four attributes and values: competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork. As part of the conference, students also participated in various Career Academies in which they had the opportunity to learn from business professionals in many different industries.

Comets Battle Jimmies in Two Places to Complete Series, Activities Set for This Week on Campus

Greetings, Comet Nation!

We’re in the final days of Mayville State Mania in the month of April, and also near the end of the regular season games for Baseball and Softball. Let’s see how we did yesterday…

Our Comet teams had to finish out their weekend series with the University of Jamestown Jimmies in two different towns to complete their weekend series of games, which were postponed due to weather.

After being spoiled with some days in the 50’s and 60’s the last few weeks, we have had to suffer through some snow that came its way into the region on Sunday and caused Baseball to travel to Aberdeen, SD to play their games, while Softball scheduled an afternoon set down in Wahpeton, ND.

While playing the Jimmies on neutral ground, it didn’t go the way the Comets wanted it to.

In Baseball action, the Jimmies got the best of the Comets, twice, to take the 4 game series 3-1. The first game was a close contest that went into extra innings, with the Jimmies coming out on top after 10 innings of play, 7-6.  The final game ended with UJ eeking out a low-scoring, 3-1 win.  The Comets now sit in 3rd place in the conference behind Bellevue in front and Valley City State in 2nd.

In Softball action, our Lady Comets were unfortunately shut-out in back to back games, with a 6-0 loss and an 8-0 loss to finish their series against the Jimmies. We’re still in the middle of the conference with a 11-13 record and 17-23 overall.

Look for updates and full recaps soon at MSUComets.com.

Due to the wet weather we are currently having, the NDSU vs Mayville State game that was set for tonight at Newman Outdoor Field has been cancelled and will not be made up.  This game was set to be televised tonight on the local BEK Sports channel 4.2.

Upcoming action for both squads will be this Friday and Saturday, as Baseball takes on Winnipeg in a 4 game stretch at Home, while Softball takes on Presentation College at Home as well on those same days.

Before the Baseball and Softball games start on Saturday, but sure to catch the MSU Comets Football Spring Game, held this year at Jerome Berg Field at 9am!

Come and get a glimpse of the new Coach Thom era that has begun at Cometville.

Other Events This Week on Campus:

Free Movie, tonight, at 8pm in the Upper Lounge

Wednesday: Intramural Dodgeball action in the Wellness Center

Thursday & Friday: Student Success Days – 12 to 4pm on Thursday, 9am to 12pm on Friday in both the Luckasen Room and Heritage Room. It is a great opportunity for current students to get things squared away before next year with your advisor, financial aid, and more!

Also on Friday:

Multicultural Showcase – Office of Diversity & Inclusion

Cultures from Around the Globe

9:00am – Study Abroad Showcase, Campus Center

11:00am – Studying and Living Abroad, Library Quiet Room

12:00pm – Music and Prizes, Cafeteria

Magnificent Monday: Comet Squads Split With Jimmies, Snow Creates Scheduling Switch

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comet Baseball and Softball squads had their doubleheaders on Saturday, but were forced to either postpone or cancel their games on Sunday due to the snow that hit us on Sunday morning.

Comet Baseball split in their matchup on Saturday, losing a close one 3-2 in the first game, while coming back and winning the second one 9-7.  The weekend series saw some history being made, as the UJ head coach, Tom Hager, collected his 600th career win with their 3-2 victory.

With the loss and the win, the overall record is 36-7 with a 17-3 conference record.

Look for a recap soon at MSUComets.com for the baseball games from Saturday.

Sunday’s games were moved to today, down to Northern State in Aberdeen, SD, where the Comets will finish their series with the Jimmies. Game time is 1pm for a start, catch the play-by-play stats through the DakStats page.

Lady Comet Softball also had a series split with the Jimmies, while having their Sunday games moved to today, at Wahpeton, ND to complete them.

In the first game on Saturday, The Jimmies took the first game in a close 2-0 win.  The Comets came close to putting some runs on the board, but where shut out at the plate with some strikeouts.  The second game left the Comets on the winning side after an extra-inning affair. After tying the game 2-2 in the 7th, the Comets’ own Daisy Macias smashed a 2-run homer to take the lead 4-2 on her 2/5 day at the plate with a HR and double to boot.  Dani Sheridan also collected 2 hits for the Comets. Catch the recap here of Saturday’s games at MSUComets.com.

The Lady Comets now sit directly in the middle of the conference, at 11-11 and 17-21 overall.

Upcoming action for Comet Baseball includes a game at NDSU, which will be televised Tuesday on the BEK Sports channel (4.2 locally on the airwaves) at 6:30pm from Newman Outdoor Field at Fargo, ND. It will be one, 9-inning game.  Comet Radio will also be there live with Chris Larson doing the play-by-play for us.

Friday & Saturday will be another doubleheader weekend at home for the Comet squads.

Baseball takes on Winnipeg on both days, while Softball takes on Presentation College both days.

Look for some full previews on Comet Pride Friday’s blog post.

Magnificent Monday: Comets Extend Streak to 15, Lady Comets Pick up a Win

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comet Baseball and Softball teams had another home stretch of games over the Easter weekend. They played on Friday and Saturday for two games a piece each day.

Coming off some home game winning streaks, both squads were looking to continue to stay on the winning side.

Our Baseball team did just that, while the Lady Comets came away with a lone victory in their last game of the weekend.

Lady Comets Battle Blue Hawks, Finish With a Win

Friday’s games for our Lady Comets were a tough set for the Comets to get through, as the Dickinson State Blue Hawks were hot at the plate all day, winning 7-3 in the first game and 9-3 in the second game. Sunday’s action was another hot-hitting affair for the Blue Hawks as they won the first game 10-0, while the Comets silenced the Blue Hawks bats in the final game with a 1-0 victory and Shaye Kemball going the distance with the shut-out win and 6 K’s on the day, allowing only 2 hits as well.

Dig up all the stats here at MSUComets.com!

Comet Baseball Bombs Blue Hawks With 49 Runs

The Comet Baseball team continues to extend their winning streak with another commanding performance at the plate in their games against DSU. The Blue Hawks had a hard time controlling the power at the plate from the Comets, as they collected 49 runs in just 4 games.  Friday’s action started with the Comets winning 16-3 and 8-3 to start the weekend battle off strong. Saturday’s action included another 8-3 win and a 17-2 routing in the final game of the series.

This extended our winning streak to 15 games, and an impressive 33 wins to 6 losses on the season!

With 49 runs, there were a lot of hits and even some home runs to talk about.

Catch up on the action here at MSUComets.com!

Next action for both squads are:

Lady Comets vs Bemidji State on Thursday, April 20th at home in doubleheader action starting at 3pm.

Baseball vs U-Winnipeg at Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, April 19th at 1pm.

Comets Complete Weekend Sweeps Over Waldorf, Tighe Hired for MBB Helm

Greetings, Comet Nation!

We had a lot of home action this past weekend in Cometville for our Baseball and Softball teams, as they faced Waldorf University on Friday and Saturday.

Both teams played back to back days of doubleheaders, and came out victorious in all 4 games each!

It has many wondering if it was the first time ever that both Baseball and Softball swept their home games over the same weekend.  Maybe it was the first time, maybe not, but still it was pretty impressive for both teams to claim 4 victories each!

Lady Comet Softball Climbs Up The Conference with 4 Straight Wins:

Our Lady Comets took to Karlstad Field over in Portland to tackle the Warriors from Waldorf.  The Comets had some hot bats to start with, and it didn’t end from there.  The first game was a 12-4 routing, followed up with an 8-1 win to finish the day on Friday.

Saturday’s action had the Comets making a comeback to come out on the winning side, 7-6, then capturing yet another big win with a 3-1 victory over the Warriors to complete the sweep!

A Job Well Done, Lady Comets!

Catch up on all the high-performing stats by our Lady Comets here:

Friday’s Lady Comets Recaps

Saturday’s Lady Comets Recaps

Overall, the Comets lifted their overall record to .500 at 15-15 a piece, and the NSAA Conference record to 9-7, climbing up to the middle spot in the conference at 5th place, but are just wins away from 3rd right now.

————————

Baseball Outscores Warriors 33-6 in 4-game stretch vs Waldorf

Comet Baseball continues to stay on the winning side after their home game stretch against Waldorf as well.

The 4-game series had 2 shutouts for the Comets, while only allowing 6 runs total to be scored by the Warriors.

Friday’s action started with a 9-0 victory and followed it up with a 6-3 win to end the day.

Saturday’s games were on Breast Cancer Awareness Day, as money was raised for Hospice of ND as a part of the day’s events.  The Comets took the lead right away in the first 2 innings, due to 2 homers by Jose Guzman in both innings, helping drive in 8 total runs for the Comets.  The Comets went en-route to a 14-0 victory and followed up the first game with a close 4-3 win to round out the sweep.

Catch all the high scoring stats here:

Baseball Sweeps Waldorf

The Comets Baseball Team is having a super season so far.

We are 27-6 overall, which is the 5th best winning percentage in all of the NAIA!

They are also on a 9-game winning streak. We’re currently tied with U-Jamestown in the conference, as Bellevue currently claims the top conference spot at 12-0, followed by our 10-2 record.

Darren Tighe Hired as New Head MBB Coach

The interviews are over, and the public presentations are complete. The Comets have now selected Darren Tighe as the new Head MBB Coach to lead the Comets squad!

Coach Tighe comes to us from Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN, where he’s been the head coach for the past few seasons, where he is coming off a record-breaking year for the RC Warriors.
