Mayville State University Collegiate DECA Participates in International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California

From April 19th through April 24st, 15 Mayville State University Collegiate DECA students participated in the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The annual conference provides the opportunity for students to compete against others from all over the world in business specific events. MSU students had to qualify for the Anaheim conference at the state competition held in Fargo, North Dakota this past February.

Collegiate DECA’s overlying mission is to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”  MSU Collegiate DECA is open to students in all majors. Students spend many hours fundraising, but also receive generous support from the Larson Leadership Program and the “After Hours” social events organized by the Division of Business.

As a team, the Mayville State University Chapter received the Community Service Award which is designed to recognize Collegiate DECA chapters for civic activities performed on campus and in their communities. Maddie Gallardo was recognized individually for her contributions to the state of North Dakota as a ND Collegiate DECA Vice President with the Outstanding State Leadership ribbon.

The MSU team received a chapter leadership award and all 15 students received individual leadership recognition on the stage at the Anaheim Hilton ballroom during the Leadership Passport Awards ceremony. The Collegiate DECA Leadership Passport Program encourages local chapters and individual members to plan activities and participate in events that enhance the experiences of members. The leadership passport rewards action taken by members and chapters that build personal and professional skill sets focused around the organizations four attributes and values: competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork. As part of the conference, students also participated in various Career Academies in which they had the opportunity to learn from business professionals in many different industries.

Results from the competitions, students, and awards are as followed:

Winning Wednesday: Comets Roll to 11 Straight W’s

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comets Baseball team had a surprise pair of home games on Tuesday, as the games down at Mitchell, SD at Dakota Wesleyan were moved up north due to weather-related issues.

With that change in plans, our Comets took the field for a pair of games, starting at 1pm at Scott Berry Field.

After falling behind 2-0, the Comets had big runs in the 4th, 5th and 6th innings with 3 runs, 6 runs, and another one respectively, collecting all 10 runs in those 3 innings to take the win, 10-4.

Brady Nygaard had a Grand Slam homer to collect 4 of those 6 runs in the high-powered 5th inning, collecting 5 RBI in the game. Cam Bonnema secured the W for the Comets with 4K’s and only 2 runs allowed in the 4 innings he pitched. Conner Starke collected the save to finish off DWU.

The second game was yet another shutout win for the Comets, as they went ahead 1-0 in the 1st and collected 3 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings. A 3 run homer by Dondrei Hubbard in the 4th helped boost the lead and keep it there for the Comets.

Jacob Torgerson had a great game on the mound, pitching for 5 innings while allowing only 2 hits and adding 3 strikeouts to his total. It was a great effort that secured the W for him.

Catch the recap and more stats at MSUComets.com!

The Comets have now extended their winning streak to 11 straight W’s and have finished on the winning side for 29 times this season with only 6 losses. There are only two teams nationally with 5 losses and 2 teams with 6, our Comets being one of those teams. We are definitely having a strong, high-performing season and we’re lucky to have some nice weather to go with it for our own stretch of home games!

We are leading all of NAIA in ERA with 2.78, and Brady Nygaard is #4 in the country for RBI’s. Dondrei Hubbard is also the nation’s leader in Fielding Percentage.

Coming up, the Comets Baseball team will play Friday and Saturday at home again, this time against conference foe Dickinson State.

Our Lady Comets will also have a pair of doubleheaders versus the Blue Hawks at home on Friday and Saturday as well.  Look for a full preview on Thursday for all the game times.

Way to go Comets!

Andi Gayner Selected as NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention!

A huge congratulations goes out to #42, Andi Gayner on the Lady Comets Basketball team!

She’s been selected as an NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention selection!

Coming off a stunning season where the Junior from Dassel, MN was the NSAA leading scorer (19.1 pts/game) and almost averaging a double-double (7.9 boards/game), Andi’s talents have taken her far this season.

She recorded many double-double games and was the NSAA Player of the Week twice.

She’ll undoubtedly help lead the Lady Comets as a high performer next season for her final one as a Comet.

A Job Well Done, Andi Gayner!

Throwback Thursday: Revisiting a Legacy of Legends and Leaders

Greetings, Comet Nation!

With this year’s baseball season having such historic accomplishments like Coach Berry’s 1000th win, one must begin to ponder a bit more on the rich history of Baseball at Mayville State, as well as a look back at some of the legendary coaches who left a great legacy of excellence here at the college.

For those who know, Coach Berry took over in 1982 after Comet HOF Coach Al Meyer coached the Comets for many years.

Coach Meyer was inducted into the Comet Hall of Fame in 1983 in the inaugural year of the Hall, alongside coaching legends Lewy Lee and Jerome Berg.

Did you know that Al Meyer and Jerome Berg were Comet Athletes in the Lewy Lee era?

In digging up some history on Coach Meyer, it was discovered that Jerome Berg played football for Lewy Lee and Al Meyer was a student coach for baseball, as well as being a basketball player (actually a 4-sport athlete) for the Comets.

47 Al Meyer basketball

This photo is from the 1947 yearbook of Al Meyer as a Comet hoopster.

48 baseball page

This page is from the 1948 yearbook, telling about the beginnings of the national pastime returning to MSTC, with the help of Lewy Lee as Athletic Director and Al Meyer as the student coach and first baseman of the squad.

My guess is that is Al Meyer at first base, making the catch at the very bottom.

48 team

Here’s a picture up close of the ’48 team that started it all. If you zoom in close enough, you can see them wearing the “Mayville Red Caps” team jerseys as the team uniforms. This was the local amateur team back then, which Al Meyer and also Coach Berry had a part in coaching for many decades.

(For more info on the Red Caps team, make a visit to the lower level of the MSU Larson Leadership Center, home of the MSU Foundation, and see the wonderful history displayed there on this team!)

Coach Meyer was hired in the fall 1948 to teach and coach at Mayville State, taking over the program he helped bring back to life.

Here are some snapshots from the 1950 yearbook, which covered the ’49 season in the recaps.

49 team

49 baseball stats

The team played a handful of games, but had some big wins over NDAC.

49 baseball action

Some action shots from the same year are here.

All in all, Coach Meyer coached for 33 seasons at Mayville State, from 1948-1981.

Combine that with Coach Berry’s current string since then of 35 seasons, the Comets Baseball program been coached for an astounding 68 seasons by only 2 head coaches!

It is an amazing LEGACY to behold.

Speaking of Legacies, have you heard about the Legacy of Leadership Turf Campaign?

legacy pic

It is the fundraising campaign to help convert our football and baseball fields to artificial turf.

Many campuses throughout the region and the nation are doing this, for the safety of the athletes, extended playing time, savings in maintenance, and more.

To convert both fields would help save the university over $55,000 per year in labor and equipment costs that it currently takes. This savings would help pay for itself over 15 years.

Things like repainting lines, bagging grass clippings, mowing in general… those costs can add up year after year. More colleges are turning to this for those costly and recurring maintenance reasons.

It would also make the university more attractive and competitive in hosting events, such as high school games and college playoffs, not to mention being more attractive in recruiting students to compete here.

Plus, we aren’t just talking a lone use for sports here. The ever-growing HPER division would utilize the facilities greatly in their class time, extending the classroom to the outdoors in a safe environment. Recreational activities such as intramural sports would also benefit the students on campus. Over 23% of the student body who are majoring or minoring in HPER, making a huge impact on the student body.

Some other bonuses:

No more muddy fields and turf repair after torrential rains

A smooth, level playing surface for all activities

Eases the strain of scheduling activities indoors for all sports and their needs.

When you consider the cost savings and the benefits it provides to the students, it is something worth providing to benefit the whole of Comet Nation.

Would you consider donating and being part of the Legacy of Leadership for this campaign? Funds are still in great demand for this project to take place.

Consider giving to it today and help Mayville State create the legends of tomorrow!

Make it a Great Day To Be A Comet for those in the future!

Comet Throwback Thursday: 1987 Comet Softball

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Today, we go back nearly 30 years ago and take a look at the 1987 Lady Comet Softball Team!

87 SB Dugout

When a person looks back in past yearbooks for notes and records on the teams of lore, some years are dry for content, while others give you a lot of information.

The annual for 1987 had a great recap of this championship season:

87 SB Write-up

The write-up here must have been done before the season ended, but luckily, the end of the season was recapped in the wins & losses in this section.

87 SB Record

16-9 overall record, including wins over UND and Moorhead State

10-2 record in the WACND Conference

WACND Regular Season and Tourney Champs!

Head Coach of the team was Sue Schultz.

Standout Sue Olson was not only great at basketball, but stood out in her softball gear as well. She was the lone senior on a thin 15 player roster. She batted .486 over 14 games.

Defensive plays were keeping the young Lady Comets on the winning side for a good portion of the season. They had 4 game sweeps over U-Mary & Jamestown, and a split with Valley City.

They faced Jamestown twice in the WACND Tourney, beating them first 8-4, then beating Valley 9-2, and facing the Jimmies a second time in a 7-1 win.

They went to play Northern State in regional play, falling 8-1, winning 4-1, and ending their season on a 8-6 heartbreaker to the Wolves.

Don’t forget about “I’m Thankful For Mayville State Day” Today!

Winning Wednesday: Thankful For Mayville State Day Tomorrow!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

What has Mayville State meant to you?

Was it a place where you had great instruction?

Personal Service from every department?

Where you part of a student organization that greatly impacted your life?

Did you play for a team, and develop lifelong friendships and bonds?

Did Mayville State help prepare you for your current career?

I’m going to “take off the mask” of Captain Comet for a minute, and tell you my story as Rick Karboviak, past student (twice) at Mayville State, and why I’m thankful for the time I spent here as a student.

I’m a Finley, ND native, and when I looked at colleges to attend, I discovered Mayville State while at the college fair they were hosting. My plans were to find a college to enter the field of Athletic Training, since I was a student manager/trainer for many teams at the high school level, and my HS teacher and coach, George Ziegler, helped direct me toward that field.

Mr. Ziegler was an MSU grad himself, and his suggestion to attend helped me greatly in making my final decision.  Mayville State at that time had an internship route of classes to take, along with 1500 hours of training internship experience during the course of your time as a student trainer in college. I could take an Exercise Science route (the current Fitness & Wellness Major) and combine it with my internship classes to be eligible to take the NATA’s certification test when I was finished with college.

I visited campus, met with admissions staff and some students, and decided this was where I should be. It was close to home, and many of my past teachers and coaches had a connection as alumni of Mayville State. We also played here a lot for district basketball tournaments, so I already felt a close connection to the college. My first college basketball game was when I was a student in HS and our coach brought us over for a Mayville/Valley game… still to this day, it was a memorable experience to see a hot rivalry come to life on that court!

When I began here, my roommate was current Business professor, Robert Johnston. We stayed in Birkelo Hall for 2 years together. My time spent as a student manager my freshman year, and as a student trainer my sophomore year was quite memorable.  I helped with the Football team and also the Men’s Basketball team, starting the first year of Head Coach Tim Miles’ (current Head MBB Coach at Nebraska) time as the head coach of the MBB team here. I also worked side by side with current Head Athletic Trainer, Tim O’Brien. I also got to know many other head and assistant coaches, many of which I had as instructors in HPE.

The MBB team had quite a successful run, and Coach Miles became a hot ticket in the college coaching ranks.  He was hired at Southwest Minnesota State after 2 years here. He called me up when he got the job, and jokingly asked me if I wanted to transfer there and do the same work for him. To make a long story short, I ended up checking out the school and spent two more seasons with Coach Miles at SMSU.  However, I got very stressed and burnt-out on the field of athletic training, and decided I needed a switch in career focus.  I could do two things: I could stay and complete things at SMSU, or I thought of coming back to Mayville State.

A big part of me missed the personal connections I had with students, staff and faculty.  While at a bigger college, I felt I only knew the athletes I worked with. Back at Mayville State, I had many more friends and connections that weren’t entirely connected to the sports teams I worked with. I knew people from the clubs I was in, the classes we took, the dorms we lived in.

friend befriender photo

(The 1996-97 MSU FRIEND/BeFRIENDer Club’s gathering at Turtle River State Park, helping to kick off the Fall ’96 semester for new freshmen!)

Clubs like the FRIEND/BeFRIENDer Program (similar to Peer Leaders today) helped me develop friendships that have continued to last.  I really missed those close, personal connections you develop with people while at this college.

So, I decided to return to Cometville and complete my degree with a new focus on Sports Performance & Fitness for my career focus.  My internships and work experience credits were done as a student strength coach, working with all the sports teams in the weight room, as well as with a sports performance franchise that had a Mayville State connection. John Frappier, a mid 1980’s graduate of MSU, developed the Frappier Acceleration Sports Training franchise (now known as Athletic Republic).  My internship was with the site in Grand Forks, ND at that time. John was a past student of my own mentor back here, Dr. Marty Johnson. When I met with Marty before I came back, he really helped me in laying out a plan of action of where to go with my education and career goals. I even found out that I had a few less classes to take if I came back, so I was even more excited to come back and finish my degree here!

Even the coaching classes I took, like Sports Psychology with Chuck Gremmels, was something that stuck with me in my time as a coach.  I picked up a Coaching minor with my education and Chuck’s class was something I always fell back on.  He made all of us create a binder of quotes, ideas, and methods for motivating athletes as a coach. I have coached at 3 schools for a number of boys and girls sports, and Chuck’s class binder was by my side to help guide the teams I coached. I now have turned the highlights of that binder into a guide that I sell on Amazon Kindle.

I am very thankful for the 3 of the 5 years that I spent here at Mayville State, as the personal connections I made as a student have lasted ever since.

Now, I’m thankful for Mayville State for hiring me to be an Admissions Recruiter for the school in August of 2014.  I get to share a bit of my story each day with new student recruits, and also share other stories that help tell the complete story of Mayville State and the impact it can have on its students.

I try to give back in a new role as a member of the Comet Athletic Club’s board, helping with functions like the 3-on-3 Basketball Tourney, Sportsman’s Raffle, and many other social events for the CAC throughout the year. This role also helps me feel connected to Comet Athletics in a whole new avenue once again.

Mayville State is not only a great place for an education, but it is a great place to work! The commitment to Personal Service is as strong as ever, and we continue to lead the way for many students in helping them get the education they desire for their career goals.  As I often tell people, I get to go to work every day and talk to people about my favorite college!

—–

So, when Thursday rolls around, take a minute or two and think back at how much Mayville State has meant to you.

How did the impact of faculty and staff affect you?

How did the impact of the education you received here affect your career?

How can you help impact more lives of the students here at Mayville State?

Isn’t it time to give back and be thankful for what Mayville State has done for you?

Help support scholarships and help make a great impact on the students here at MSU.

Coach Scott Berry Reaches 1000 Wins!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

History was made yesterday:

Comet Baseball Head Coach Scott Berry achieved a huge milestone with his 998th, 999th, and 1000th wins in Winnipeg, MB!

Coach Berry 1000 Wins Meme

The wins came in 7-4, 3-2 and 12-3 fashion.

Comet Nation was on high alert, glued to their phones, computers, tablets and on social media to catch the historic trip to “#Chasing1000”.

In an unexpected tripleheader of a day, the Comets had a Saturday & Sunday 4 game match-up moved to 3 games on Monday after a lengthy wait due to wet weather. It gave Coach Berry an opportunity to attain the mark all in one day with a 3-game sweep.

The Comets were amped up and ready to help Coach Berry attain this important, historic milestone!

Catch the full report on all the action that led to yesterday’s historic moment:

Here is the story at MSUComets.com.

The Grand Forks Herald also reported on the big day.

Coach Berry is a great example of what it is like to be a Comet.

After playing for legendary Comet Baseball Head Coach Al Meyer, he came back and coached under him for a season in 1981, then took over the program in 1982.

He has been at Mayville State ever since, and has been a huge influence on many students’ lives beyond the baseball diamond. His influence has led him to be inducted into 4 Hall of Fames, and he’s given back to the game by serving on numerous boards, such as being president of the American Baseball Coaches Association in the past. He is now on the ABCA Board of Directors. He has also served on numerous local, regional and national organizations during his time here at Mayville State. He has been a tremendous ambassador for the game!

There will be a special recognition of Coach Berry’s milestone this Saturday at the home DH scheduled against Presentation College.

It certainly is a great day to be a Comet when a milestone like this is reached!

Comet Nation is proud of having Coach Berry as a true leader to follow his example for all these years!

A JOB WELL DONE, COACH BERRY!

Our Comets Lady Softball team also had two home games on Monday versus Dickinson State.

The Comets did not come out on the winning side against the NSAA power, falling 10-5 and 8-0.

Look for an update soon at MSUComets.com.
