Winning Wednesday: Both Teams Win, Plus Both Are Nationally Ranked!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It’s another WINNING WEDNESDAY!

Welcome back to the Spring 2018 semester!  Our Basketball teams have been playing very well on the winning side the past few weeks, including these recent wins, all at home this past weekend and just last night:

WBB over Viterbo on Friday, 68-59

MBB over Viterbo on Friday, 89-69

WBB over Waldorf on Saturday, 74-54

MBB over Waldorf on Saturday, 90-60

WBB over Trinity Bible on Tuesday, 90-33

MBB over Trinity Bible on Tuesday, 78-35

You can catch all the big recaps of the games here in the links provided for each game!

Along with the recent wins, the two teams have been making some noise in the NAIA National Poll Rankings!

The Lady Comets entered the rankings at #16 in the first poll, and have held onto #23 in the last two polls. They are also leading in top ten in a host of statistical categories, such as steals, 3’s/game, and more. Leading scorer for the team is Andi Gayner, who is averaging 19 points/game this season, ranking her #15 individually in the NAIA D-II.

For the first time since the historic 2006-07 season, the Comet Men have re-entered the national ranks this week, this time debuting at #22! The 13-3 overall record is standing out well, and the 6-1 record in the NSAA so far is also making others take notice. They are also near the top of the pack in Total Rebounds/Game (43, #4) and their stingy defense is only allowing 68 points/game, ranking them at #6. Sharp-shooter Daniel Lindgren is leading the team with a 15 points/game average, along with rebounding force Eric Staebler who is averaging over 7 boards/game.

Comet Pride Friday: Lady Comets to Battle Two Iowa Teams This Weekend

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday!

Comet Women Travel to Iowa

After an extended break, the Lady Comets are getting back into action this weekend with a two game stretch down in Iowa, at the Briar Cliff Holiday Classic in Sioux City.

Today, they will take on #6 Morningside College at 1pm. Morningside is 12-3 overall, coming off a 10 game streak that was just snapped in their last game with a loss to Hastings. Our Lady Comets are currently ranked #23, are 10-3 with a 2 game streak, and are 4-1 on the road this year. It should be a good battle to watch!

Saturday’s action will be against the host team, Briar Cliff University at 5:30pm. BCU is currently 6-9 and have lost their last 2 games.

Here’s a handy one page guide of links for the Live feed and stats for both games:

Magnificent Monday: Comet Men Get Big Upset, Lady Comets Split Over Weekend

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a big weekend of 4 home games this past Friday & Saturday for both basketball teams, as we opened up our NSAA conference season against Presentation College and the University of Jamestown.

Friday’s games ended in a complete sweep for both Comet teams, as the Women handled PC with strong defense and some good spurts of offense to pull away with a 31 point victory.  The Men had a handful to contain with the Saints, as the final 4.5 minutes of play was perhaps the most nerve-racking time frame for both teams in the game.  The score was 74-72 in favor of the Comets at the 4:31 mark, with both teams going scoreless and playing some stingy defense until the buzzer.

Catch the reports here from MSUComets.com!

Women’s Recap

Men’s Recap

Saturday’s games were against nationally ranked teams for the Comets, as the UJ women were ranked #8 and their Men were ranked #18.  The Lady Comets were close in the first half, but a cold second half allowed UJ to pull ahead and keep off a late Comet fight.  For our Comet Men, they came out ready to play after a taxing game on Friday night and were able to hold a high-scoring team to 66 points and defeat the conference rival in the end, 80-66. It was a big win for first year Comet head coach Darren Tighe, as his team is now on a 5 game winning streak and 2-0 to start conference play.

Catch all the recaps here:

Women’s Recap

Men’s Recap

Next action for the Men will be Tuesday night at 7pm against UM-Crookston in an exhibition game.

Both teams return to conference battles this weekend on the road against long-standing rival Valley City State on Friday and then out to Dickinson State on Saturday.

When we play Valley City State, you know what that means: RIVALRY WEEK!

Winning Wednesday: Lady Comets Ranked #16, Both Comet Teams Sweep Cougars!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

With both Comet teams on the road yesterday, I had to keep watch over the place for a while. Everyone stays at bay when they see Cap’s Bat of Doom.

It truly is a Winning Wednesday today, as both Comet teams claimed victories last night over the UM-Morris Cougars down in Morris, MN, plus we found out that our Lady Comets are currently ranked #16 in the country!

Lady Comets Ranked #16:

Before Tuesday night’s game, the Lady Comets received some exciting news: they received 151 votes to earn a #16 ranking in the latest NAIA D2 WBB poll!  They entered the evening 6-1 and added another win when the night was over.

Catch the story here at MSUComets.com!

Comet Men Keep Cougars in the Cage with 82-72 Win

It’s tough to play the same team twice within about a week’s time, but the Comets had to do just that and face UM-Morris down in Morris, MN one more time after defeating them last Tuesday. Things were pretty close in the first half, and for the first few minutes of the 2nd half, too. The Comets then exploded with a big run, fueled by a number of Comets including the hot shooting from Cameron Epps, who captured 6 three’s on the night. UM-Morris fought back a little towards the end, but it was the Comets pulling away 82 to 72 to bring the victory back home on the bus with them.  The Comets are 4-2 overall and are currently on a 3 game winning streak as they head into conference play this weekend.

See how the action played out here at MSUComets.com!

Lady Comets Escape UM-Morris With A Win

With a great first half, it was looking like another big win ahead for the Lady Comets, just like it was last week against the same squad from UM-Morris.  Going into the half with a 13 point lead, the Lady Comets had to keep plugging away at a pesky bunch of Cougars in the second half, who went on a big run of their own to narrow the gap in the final minute of play.  In the end, the Lady Comets came home with another win, 66 to 62. Joelle Ertl was a key sparkplug for the Comets victory, hitting 6 three’s and totaling 25 points on the night to share the leading scorer limelight with UM-Morris’s Meagan Theisen’s 25. The 7-1 Lady Comets are looking very strong with a 3 game winning streak as well, as they enter into NSAA action his weekend at home.

See how it all happened here at MSUComets.com!

NSAA Action Opens Up At Home This Weekend!

Comet Weekend Review

Greetings, Comet Nation!

This weekend we had 3 games over Friday and Saturday in Comet Basketball action. The Men played two games in the Husky Hoops Classic down at St Cloud State in St Cloud, MN, while the Women travelled eastward to Bemidji State at Bemidji, MN to take on BSU in another exhibition match-up.

Comet Men Compete in Husky Hoops Classic

The Men fought very hard on Friday night against a tough NCAA Division II team when they faced the host team, St Cloud State.  The Comets were a bit outmatched in size but still found a way to bring the score within reach at times.  Turnovers proved to be a costly measure and we fell 67 to 51 in the end.

Saturday’s game at SCSU was a better game overall than Friday’s, as the Comets took on the St Scholastica Saints out of Duluth, MN.  The Men took the lead right away and never looked back, even putting off a 2nd half surge by the Saints and retaining their lead towards the end for their 2nd win on the season.  Overall record now is 2-2, although 4 games have been in exhibition play against Division I & II teams (U-Mary, USD, Minot State and SCSU).

Catch the recaps here at MSUComets.com!

Lady Comets Battle It Out with BSU

For the Lady Comets, they had their game at the same time of the Men’s game on Saturday, which probably made some Comet fans from afar open up two different windows on their computers to catch both games taking place. After BSU climbed up to an early lead, the Comets came back in full force and captured their own lead for most of the game.  A 4th quarter surge by BSU proved to be too much for the Lady Comets in the end, as a battle in free throws decided the game in the final few seconds of play.  BSU came out ahead by one, 63-62. Catch the recap here at MSUComets.com.

You can catch both Comet teams in action at HOME tomorrow night, as they both take on the University of Minnesota-Morris, Lady Comets start their game at 5:30, Men at 7:30.

Toys For Tickets:

The Lady Comets are once again doing a “Toys for Tickets” campaign this year, so please bring an unwrapped toy for free admission to the games this Tuesday! The campaign will continue for the Dec 1st and Dec 2nd home games versus Presentation College and the University of Jamestown, respectively.

Comet Weekend Review: A Tough 2 Days for 3 Comet Teams

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a very difficult time this past Friday and Saturday for 3 of our Comet teams.

Friday’s action began with the Lady Comet Basketball team facing the NDSU Bison in Fargo in exhibition play.

The Comets struggled to get their high powered offense going and the Bison, playing with early season struggles of their own, were able to climb ahead in the battle.  In the end, the Comets fell to the Bison, 87 to 43.  The loss didn’t affect the overall record due to the exhibition match-up. Catch the recap here at MSUComets.com.

It was a short trip back home for a big NAIA match-up between #3 Concordia University and the Lady Comets on Saturday. It was another struggling day of hoops for us, as the #3 team was showing why they were ranked near the top. Turnovers seems to be an issue all weekend, and things didn’t sharpen up well as the visiting Bulldogs won the game 93 to 58. Catch the review here at MSUComets.com.

At roughly the same time that our Lady Comets were playing at home, the Comet Football team was finishing up their season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State. DSU came out strong right away, scoring 8 touchdowns in the first half, and ten overall in the game.  The Comets were able to get on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter, leaving the game 70-7 in favor of the Blue Hawks.  Read up on the game here at MSUComets.com.

To wrap up the day, the Comet Men’s Basketball team travelled to Vermillion, SD to take on the USD Coyotes, coached by former Comet MBB coach Craig Smith.  The Comets were able to keep it as close as 2 points when the score read 31-29 in the first half. However, USD took control and had an advantage in rebounding overall, turning many of those into some extended runs.  In the end, the Comets fell in this exhibition match-up, 87-59.  On a bright note, Daniel Lindgren led all scorers with 18 on the night.  See the review here at MSUComets.com.

Now that Comet Football has ended, it’s ALL BASKETBALL for a few months.

The MBB team will play Minot State on Tuesday, with Friday/Saturday action down in St Cloud, MN vs St Cloud State and St Scholastica, respectively. Our Lady Comets will travel to Bemidji State in Bemidji, MN on Saturday as well for an exhibition game there.

The Men are currently at 1-2 overall, while the Lady Comets are sitting at 4-1 overall.

Comet Pride Friday: Weekend Preview

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday to you!

We have 4 games going on this weekend: 1 today, and 3 tomorrow!

Today: Our Lady Comets Basketball team will travel an hour to the south and play NDSU in an exhibition game. If you’re unable to make it there, the game should be broadcast on Midco Sports Network and ESPN3, plus WatchESPN.com online. Radio broadcasts will be on 92.7 FM and 1660 AM. It will be a great test for the Lady Comets tonight, since Saturday’s game will be a challenge too.

Saturday’s Games:

Football: Our men will take the field for the last time this season out in Dickinson at Dickinson State on Saturday at 1pm Mountain time, 2pm Central time. DSU is 7-0 in the NSAA, 8-1 overall and ranked #12 in the country. It will be a tough battle ahead for the Comets, as we’ve battled through injuries and a series of very hard contests this season.

Women’s Basketball: You can catch your Lady Comets on Saturday at home against Concordia University, which is ranked #3 in the nation right now in the NAIA. The Lady Comets have been hot at home as they’ve come out of the blocks in a 4-0 start on the Lewy Lee hardwood. Game time is 2pm. Come out to support our Lady Comets and give them a huge home court advantage!

Men’s Basketball: Our Comet Men will travel to Vermillion, SD to take on the University of South Dakota in an exhibition game as well on Saturday night at 6pm. The head coach of USD is former Comet MBB coach, Craig Smith, who led the Comets to their greatest success in program history in 2007 when the Comets reached the NAIA championship game and were national runners-up. The Comet Men are currently 1-2 on the season so far, and the test against USD will give them a great challenge to prepare for the conference season that begins shortly.

The Football and WBB games on Saturday can be watched live through our Live Portal site . We’ll be providing the live feed from home, while DSU will be providing the live feed from DSU.

The MBB game will be provided live through USD .

Be sure to catch the game at home on Saturday if you can, and catch the Comets online from afar! It is certainly a great time to be a Comet fan with so many options to watch all your teams from a distance!

Andi Gayner Selected as NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention!

A huge congratulations goes out to #42, Andi Gayner on the Lady Comets Basketball team!

She’s been selected as an NAIA All-American, Honorable Mention selection!

Coming off a stunning season where the Junior from Dassel, MN was the NSAA leading scorer (19.1 pts/game) and almost averaging a double-double (7.9 boards/game), Andi’s talents have taken her far this season.

She recorded many double-double games and was the NSAA Player of the Week twice.

She’ll undoubtedly help lead the Lady Comets as a high performer next season for her final one as a Comet.

A Job Well Done, Andi Gayner!

Comet Weekend Wrap-Up: WBB Finishes With NSAA Picks, Softball Grabs a Win

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Both Friday and Saturday had some action for our Lady Comet Basketball and Softball teams.

The WBB team competed late in the night at 9pm in Jamestown to take on UJ in the semifinal action of the NSAA Tourney.  Our Comets took the lead at the end of the 1st in a close 16-15 score, falling behind in the 2nd to a 34-25 deficit at the half. The Jimmies kept pouring it on in the 3rd and 4th quarters, stopping any momentum the Comets were bringing at them. In the end, our season ended to the tune of a 69-54 loss.  Andi Gayner led the Comets with 21, with 11 of those scored in the final quarter. Naomi Torgerson was behind her with 10. Karleigh Weber nearly had double digits in boards with 9.

The Lady Comets finished the season at 17-12, another winning season for Coach Hutter and his squad, making it a string of six straight winning seasons and 4 NSAA semifinal matchups in a row, including an NSAA crown in 2014. Our team faced adversity early on, after suffering a blow with Joelle Ertl’s knee injury taking her out for the season in  her 2nd game of the year.  Other players had bouts of sickness and others stepped up and helped the team on some streaks and battles, including a nice 7 game win streak at mid-season to help the Comets stay away from the bottom of the conference standings.

The NSAA All-Conference teams have also been selected, with standout junior Andi Gayner selected as a First-Team pick.  She led the conference in scoring at 19.1 per game, and many double-double games to go with it. Fellow teammate Naomi Torgerson was the NSAA Newcomer of the Year, and also an Honorable Mention selection.  The freshman guard put in some impressive performances throughout the season with 12.8 points/game, and for those who watched her play, it’s no surprise that she was selected as Newcomer of the Year.

A Job Well Done to Andi and Naomi, and to the rest of the Lady Comets this year! With no seniors on the team, the squad looks to come back strong with plenty of young members that have quality experience.

Comet Softball:

Our Lady Comet Softball team went back down to Aberdeen, SD for the start of the NSAA conference season indoors under the indoor facility there at Presentation College.

The Comets faced off against Bellevue in a doubleheader on Friday, unable to grab victories over the Bruins in a 3-1 loss and falling 7-4 in the 2nd game of the day.

Saturday went a little better, as we took on Dakota State and beat the Trojans 6-4 in the first game.  Danielle Sheridan had a 3 run homer and 4 RBI’s on the day with her 3 hit effort at the plate. Freshman Shaye Kemball pitched her way to her first college win as well.

The 2nd game went in favor of the Trojans as they took it in a 3-1 battle.

Grab all the stats at MSUComets.com!

Next action for our Lady Comets will be March 12th in Arizona, while our Comet Baseball team opens up their spring season at US Bank Stadium this Wednesday, March 1st!

Comet Pride Friday: Lady Comets Fight on in NSAA Tourney Tonight, Comet Softball Competes Friday, Saturday

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Happy Comet Pride Friday to you!

It’s Game Day, twice!

Our Lady Comets basketball team is fighting its way through the NSAA post-season tourney after a big, nail biting win over Bellevue on Wednesday night.

We captured the victory down in Nebraska over the Bruins, 66-63. After falling behind in the first half by only 5 at a 28-23 score, the Comets went on a tear with a 17-5 run and kept the Bruins at bay with some awesome free-throw shooting to take home the win.

Karleigh Weber led the team with 22, providing the sparkplug effort she’s been known for in recent contests, followed up by 17 points from Claire Blaszciek. Andi Gayner’s double-double (yep, another one!) of 14 points and 13 boards helped out greatly, plus Naomi Torgerson netting 10 for us.

We now move onto the Semifinals against #11 Jamestown, down in Jamestown at 9pm, tonight!

Catch the live feed of tonight’s action here!

Comet Softball:

Softball takes on Bellevue today in a doubleheader at Aberdeen, SD at the bubble complex there, starting at 2pm.

Tomorrow, they take on Dakota State in a doubleheader as well at 10am, making 4 games in roughly 24 hours of time for the Comets.

Check up with the live stats through DakStats, look to Facebook’s Mayville State Softball page for the live links when they are up!
