Comet Throwback Thursday: The Successful Run of Coach Kaiser in Cometville

Greetings, Comet Nation!

In the stories of famed college coaches at Mayville State, the names of Jerome Berg, Lewy Lee, Al Meyer, and Scott Berry come to mind immediately.  Those names and faces are fresh among the current Alumni of today.

However, there was one successful coach that had a short, but highly successful tenure here at Mayville State, before all of them started their own legacies.

He had a great influence on the college at a time when it first got its own official nickname, and helped build a foundation for the Lewy Lee era that was yet to arrive in 1930. He not only witnessed the college getting its new nickname of the Comets in 1925, but also was there for the grand opening of the old 1929 Gymnasium that used to be right next to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. He was the only coach to coach the Comets in the former gym inside Old Main, and the 1929 Gym.

The coach I’m talking about is Harrison Kaiser.

Harrison Kaiser was the AD and head coach of 4 sports here, all wrapped into one duty, starting in 1924 and ending in 1930.

Per the records listed in the yearbooks of the library, I was able to find the following:

1924 Football: 4-1

1925 Football: 4-3

1925-26 Basketball: 12-4 (possible title?)

1926 Baseball: unknown record, but Conference title was listed as being won.

1926 Football: 1-4

1926-27 Basketball: 6-3, 2nd in Conference

1927 Baseball: 4-1, Conference Title

1927 Football: 2-2

1927-28 Basketball: 8-8

1928 Baseball: 3-0-1, Conference Title

1928 Football: 2-2-1

1928-29 Basketball: 5-4

1929 Baseball: 11-0-1, Conference Title

1929 Football: 1-2-1

1929-30 Basketball: 5-7

1930 Baseball: 9-2-1, possible Conference Title

That’s 3 Baseball crowns, with a possible 4th, plus 1 possible Basketball title and one runner-up season.

Coach Kaiser had an overall sports coaching record here of 77-43-5.

Most notably, his Baseball coaching record was 27-3-3.

With the ties listed in baseball games, the games were called on account of darkness and the games ended in ties.

One peculiar tie happened in the 1929 Baseball season.

It appears to me to be the first international contest between our school and a team from another country.

A travelling team from Cuba, listed as the Cuban Pirates, played right here at Mayville in a tight, 4-4 contest, which ended due to running out of daylight.

Another cool bit of history was Coach Kaiser starting up the first Mayville State Teachers College Track Team.  The team was assembled in the spring of 1926.

The track team stories in the yearbooks didn’t list much for meets and records, but they did take 2nd one year at a conference meet and they also had an all-school meet to help determine who would make the squads back then. Some years, each class of Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors would compete in an intramural format.

Looking back at this era of the 1920’s and under Coach Kaiser’s helm, the Athletics department at Mayville State was laying a solid foundation of success for years to come!

Farmers Bowl Weekend Review, Plus Volleyball and Softball Too!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a great weekend for our fall tradition, the Farmers Bowl, this past Saturday. We also have Comet VB on the road in action, plus Comet Softball up in Canada for a doubleheader up there. Let’s get to the results!

The Farmers Bowl Day started off with the Farmers Bowl 5K, won by Comet MBB player Konrad Bueckers in a time of 19:33.  A full list of results is up at this page here.

The Farmers Bowl parade rolled through downtown Mayville, en route to the college around 10:30am.

Captain Comet rolled on his Comet Cruiser and followed alongside the WBB team, who were all piled up and around a truck for their part in the parade.

Our Comets then took on the Warriors of Sterling College in the Farmers Bowl.  It was a tough battle throughout the day, as the Comets took on the #14 team in the pre-season ranks in the NAIA.  Things were close to start, with the Comets only down 23-12 at the half. Sterling answered with some more scores and found themselves ahead 44 to 24.  The Comets made a charge with two more scores and some 2 point conversions to close the gap to 44-40, but it was not enough to capture a victory in the end.

Some bright spots for the Comets are the performances from new QB #18 Creighton Pfau, who in two games is now leading the country with 495 yards/game as an average, with 830 of those 990 total yards in passing!  Pfau is also a basketball player for the Comets, coming out of West Fargo, ND, and is in his first season of playing football here.  Both Comet squads are fortunate to have such a talent!

With great passing comes great receiving efforts too, and Joshua Portillo had a great game of 144 yards on 8 catches and 1 TD. Trent Momon had 114 yards on 5 catches. Adrian Carillo had 65 yards, and Jacob Lawrence had a nice collection of 61 yards and a TD in the end.

Defensively, Douglas Koepplin led with 12 tackles and Donte Stevens had 8, followed by Jason Holmes with 7 and an INT.

Catch your full recap here at MSUComets.com!

Our Comets will take on Dakota State down in Madison, SD this Saturday.

Comets Volleyball battles 4 Teams in Nebraska

Our Lady Comets Volleyball squad took to the road again, facing Mount Marty & Dakota Wesleyan on Friday, followed by McPherson College and William Penn on Saturday down in Omaha, NE.

The Comets fell to MM in 4 sets, winning 25-15, then falling 17-25, and two back to back losses of 23-25.

DWU was also a tough one, losing 26-28 in a close one, then 19-25 and 15-25.

Saturday’s action against McPherson was tight throughout, in a 25-18 win, 15-25 and 16-25 losses, coming back with a 28-26 win and falling shy in the final 5th set, 14-16.

WP was their final matchup in a 0-3 battle, falling 23-25, 19-25 and 22-25.  All in all, there were a lot of close sets that could have went the Comets’ way over that weekend stretch.

Catch all the individual stats of our Comets at MSUComets.com!

Comet Softball Wins Big Doubleheader in Fall Ball Action Over Conference Foe

Our Lady Comets Softball team traveled up to Brandon, Manitoba to take part in a special opening game ceremony for the new Ashley Neufeld Softball Complex there.  Neufeld was a former Dickinson State softball player who passed away a few years ago.  The Comets were honored to take part in the first games against DSU, who have been a tough foe for the Comets in recent years. The Comets came out with two victories on the day, with 14-6 and 8-0 victories to come home with!  A Job Well Done, Lady Comets!

Thanks to all who came and supported the Farmers Bowl Auction on Saturday, too!  Thousands of dollars were raised to help support the MSU Foundation for student scholarships here!

Comet VB Updates, Sportsmens Raffle, COMET Run, FB Preps for Thursday

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Our Comet VB team had a busy weekend with 4 games, our CAC Sportsmen’s Raffle was another huge success, our Running Club has a fun group run activity starting this week, plus Comet Football plays this Thursday too!

Comet Volleyball Update:

Our Lady Comets traveled to Iowa for another series of games in the Red Raider Classic at Northwestern College. They started off Friday with a  very tough and close match against Dakota Wesleyan.  After falling in the first set, the Comets took the 2nd one in a 25-23 battle.  The third set had DWU taking that one, while the 4th set went all the way to a 29-31 score, with DWU coming up with the overall victory in the end.

The Comets fell in three straight in their 2nd match of the day against host team Northwestern College. Scores were 10-25, 19-25, and 10-25 as the Comets struggled to come up with some solid offense.

Saturday’s games were against Briar Cliff and Morningside.  The Comets hung with BC in their battles but came up shy in 20-25, 22-25 and 22-25 scores.  Finishing up with weekend with Morningside, the Comets couldn’t get things firing right in the first set, falling 8-25.  Sets 2 and 3 were identical as well, falling in 18-25 scores in each. Grab all the stats from the weekend in the recaps found at MSUComets.com.

Next action for the Comets will be down in Omaha, Nebraska over the Labor Day Weekend coming up.

Sportsmen’s Raffle Another Huge Success:

The CAC’s 11th Annual Sportsmen’s Raffle was held once again this year at the Mayville Armory, where a complete sell-out happened for the 500 raffle tickets, in which 50 guns were raffled off.  A Polaris Ranger ATV was also given away, along with side raffles of cash prizes, gift cards, a gun safe, and many other hunting gift packages.  Thanks to all who supported the CAC Sportsmen’s Raffle this past weekend from both near and afar!

Go on a COMET Run with the Running Club!

Something new for students to try this year is the Running Club’s “COMET Run”.  COMET stands for Course and Obstacle Metabolic Exercise Training.  Members will start at the campus center parking lot by Berg Hall and run over to a nearby park.  They will go through a series of exercises in interval fashion, using various pieces of park equipment and other obstacles.

The Running Club will meet on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6:30am to go through this fun circuit, and try to wrap things up around 7am.  Running Club invites other faculty, staff and students who want to take in this fun and free workout!

MSU Running Club is also open to those interested in competing collegiately in XC and/or Track & Field as an individual, unattached athlete.  Since MSU does not have a full XC or Track squad, students who have an interest in those sports can choose to compete as individuals, running ‘unattached’ from their college. For more information on how to compete this way, please contact Rick Karboviak at Richard.karboviak@mayvillestate.edu

We’re just a few days away from Comet Football starting their first game of the season!  We’ll play down at Buena Vista University this Thursday night at 6pm. Coach Thom and his entire crew have been waiting for this week since they came onto campus back on August 6th for fall camp. I’m not sure yet if the game will be broadcast via radio or online yet, so stay tuned for an update!

Mayville State University Collegiate DECA Participates in International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California

From April 19th through April 24st, 15 Mayville State University Collegiate DECA students participated in the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, California. The annual conference provides the opportunity for students to compete against others from all over the world in business specific events. MSU students had to qualify for the Anaheim conference at the state competition held in Fargo, North Dakota this past February.

Collegiate DECA’s overlying mission is to “prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”  MSU Collegiate DECA is open to students in all majors. Students spend many hours fundraising, but also receive generous support from the Larson Leadership Program and the “After Hours” social events organized by the Division of Business.

As a team, the Mayville State University Chapter received the Community Service Award which is designed to recognize Collegiate DECA chapters for civic activities performed on campus and in their communities. Maddie Gallardo was recognized individually for her contributions to the state of North Dakota as a ND Collegiate DECA Vice President with the Outstanding State Leadership ribbon.

The MSU team received a chapter leadership award and all 15 students received individual leadership recognition on the stage at the Anaheim Hilton ballroom during the Leadership Passport Awards ceremony. The Collegiate DECA Leadership Passport Program encourages local chapters and individual members to plan activities and participate in events that enhance the experiences of members. The leadership passport rewards action taken by members and chapters that build personal and professional skill sets focused around the organizations four attributes and values: competence, innovation, integrity and teamwork. As part of the conference, students also participated in various Career Academies in which they had the opportunity to learn from business professionals in many different industries.

Comet Athletics Updates: Basketball, Milestones, and Meet Coach Thom!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

It was a rough weekend for our Comet basketball teams on the road.  Friday’s games left us shy of some wins against Valley City State, and Dickinson State got the better of us on Saturday.

Comets Fall to Vikings

On Friday night, the Lady Comets overcame a 28 point deficit in the 2nd quarter, only to fight back with a 15-0 run of their own before the half. The Comets came within 3 with 90 seconds to tick away in the game, however the Vikings kept their lead and won 77-72.  Andrea Skillingstad had a career high 25 points and a 10 board performance to go with it. Andi Gayner nearly had a double-double with her 18 points and 9 boards. Naomi Torgerson had 11 points, plus 5 assists and 4 steals.

For the Men’s team, it was a cold first half for both teams as they traded leads and thin margins of those leads. The Vikings took it away in the second half, going on a tear and fighting off another Comet surge to close the gap.  Kiree Robinson scored 10 for the Comets, followed by Eric Staebler with 8.

Comets Struggle Against Tough Blue Hawk Squads

Saturday’s games in Dickinson were also a struggle for both teams.  The Women kept it tight in the first half, leading 27-26 at the break. The Blue Hawks then poured in the buckets and scored 30 points in the 3rd quarter alone, leaving the Lady Comets with a big gap to fill with a 56-40 score.  The game ended with DSU winning 80-59. Andi Gayner collected another 18 points and 10 boards for her 6th double-double of the season. Naomi continued an all-around effort with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals in the game.

On the Men’s side, the Comets did not start out very hot and quickly fell 24-5 at one point, climbing back to a 35-19 score at the half. DSU kept it in cruise control for the second half and clipped along to a 70-48 victory over us. Max Cooper led the Comets with 18 points and had 8 boards.

Andi Gayner’s 1000 Point Milestone:

Andi Gayner recently achieved the 1000 point mark in career points as a Comet, and also was named NSAA Player of the Week for two weeks in a row!  Catch this update in her story below:

Terrific Tuesday: Comets Win!

Greetings, Comet Nation!
It was a great weekend to be a Comet!

Comets Football Tunnel

Our Comet Football team won their game versus Buena Vista on Saturday, plus the Lady Comets got a victory as well on Saturday out in California versus West Coast Baptist.

Football Recap:

It was a sunny fall afternoon in the friendly confines of Jerome Berg Field, as the Comets opened up their season on a winning note at home.

The first possession of the game had the Comets driving 77 yards, followed by a 2 yard scant into the end zone. With the extra point, the Comets were up 7-0.

It didn’t last long, as BVU’s QB went for 60 yards on his own for their first TD of the game. Their extra point tied it up, 7-7.

Dondrei Hubbard returned the ensuing kickoff across the house in a 95 yard return for another Comet TD, making it 14-7 after another extra point was good.

Were you there? Did you happen to catch it?  Catch it again:

Catch it again right here!

The Comets then scored on a flea-flicker play to go up 21-7 and then 28-10 with a Khari Kimbrough reception and a BVU field goal before the half completed.

The second half was driven by BVU as they mounted a 23 point comeback and came within 2 when the score hit 35-33. However, the Comets drove in another insurance TD to claim and hold the lead at 42-33 to finish the game.

The Comets Totals were:

549 total yards

368 yards by QB Andrew Blake on 35-58 passing completion. He had 2 passing TD’s, 1 rushing TD and only one interception.

Dantrel Horne led in receiving yards with 178 and the completion of the flea-flicker TD in the 2nd quarter. Superior Reed carried it 19 times for 90 yards and a TD to boot. Kicker Eddie Guerrero was 6-6 on extra points after all 6 Comet TD’s, a positive sign for the Comets this season.

Defensively, the Comets were led by Nick Xalis and Damion Sanders, each with 8 tackles and Marlon Bennett had 6. Two Comets had one interception each, being Blaine Miller and Ryan Henderson.

Comet Volleyball claims a victory out in California:

Our Lady Comets flew all the way out west to play some games out in California last weekend.

Friday’s games were not in the Comets’ favor, as we fell to Embry-Riddle 3-0 and also to U-Antelope Valley, in a 3-1 loss as well.

Saturday’s games opened up with a victory against West Coast Baptist, and the evening stretch concluded with a tight battle against Benedictine U-Mesa, losing 3-1 in a 21-25, 25-18, 14-25, and 20-25 battle.

Currently at 4-4 on the season, the Lady Comets have a 3 day stretch of games down in Nebraska coming up, beginning on Thursday.

Comet Throwback Thursday: 1940 Comet Football, Conference Champs!

Greetings, Comet Nation!

Welcome to another edition of Comet Throwback Thursday!

Football season begins in only 9 days, on our home turf of Jerome Berg Field.

The field was known for years as Grace Field, being dedicated that year and named after the college president at the time, Cyril Grace.

1940 FB Field

In its inaugural season for the stadium in 1940, the Comets made history in winning the conference title that year!

It was one of many trophies collected for the Comets under the tutelage and legendary leadership of Coach Lewy Lee.

1940 Lewy Lee

The Comets had wins over Bottineau, Wahpeton (first loss in 4 years for them), Valley City, and Minot, before losing to Jamestown. The Comets clinched the conference title with the final victory over Dickinson.

1940 FB Action

9 players were selected on the all-conference team in the end.

1940 FB Team

Many years later, the field was renamed Jerome Berg Field in a special dedication in honor of another legendary Comet coach, Jerome Berg.

DECA had some great success stories to share with their contests out in Washington, D.C. the past week.

Here is a full report, put together by DECA advisor, Rob Johnston:

From April 15th through April 20st, 18 Mayville State University Collegiate DECA students participated in the International Career Development Conference in Washington, D.C. The annual conference provides the opportunity for students to compete against others from all over the world in business specific events.
